The Purge: Anarchy is a 2014 American social science fiction actionhorror film directed and written by James DeMonaco. It is the sequel to the 2013 film The Purge and stars Frank GrilloCarmen EjogoZach GilfordKiele SanchezZoë Soul, and Michael K. Williams, while Edwin Hodge reprises his role of "The Stranger" from the first movie.[3] It was released worldwide on July 18, 2014.[4]

The film was met with generally mixed reviews, with most critics agreeing the film was an improvement over the original, and grossed over $111 million. The movie is notable for its dramatic change over the original: while the first film was set entirely in one house, this film is set all over the Los Angeles wide area to give the notion of what usually happens during the Purge.

Synopsis[edit]

In the 2010s following an economic collapse, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) have taken over, instituted totalitarian rule, and reinstated themselves as the new government. Using the 28th amendment to the United States Constitution, they established one night a year—сalled "the Purge"—in which all crime is legal and all police, fire, and medical emergency services are shut down for 12 hours, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.[5]

The purge has resulted in crime rates plummeting, unemployment rates at 1% and a strong economy. Although the population believes it is simply an act of catharsis, in reality, it is used as a method of artificial population control, as the people living in poverty and poor areas are usually the main targets.

Plot[edit]

It is March 21, 2023, hours before the start of the annual Purge. While television programs credit the Purge for recording low unemployment and poverty levels, people across the country are preparing either to commit acts of violence or to barricade themselves indoors against the mayhem. Meanwhile, an anti-Purge resistance group intermittently hacks into television programs to broadcast their own messages that challenges the system, stating that the Purge does not cleanse aggression, but rather eliminates the poor from the population.

In Los Angeles, Eva Sanchez, a waitress, rushes home to her daughter Cali and her terminally ill father Papa Rico. As they prepare to lock down for the evening, Papa Rico slips out of the apartment and into a waiting limo. He leaves behind a note explaining that he sold himself to a wealthy family as a Purge offering in exchange for $100,000 which will be transferred to Eva's and Cali's bank accounts following the Purge.

Married couple Shane and Liz are driving to the house of Shane's sister to wait out the Purge. They stop at a market but when they return to their car, a gang of hoodlums silently taunts them. They quickly drive away, but their car dies just as the Purge commences. They discover that the gang had tampered with the car by cutting the fuel line. The gang reappears, forcing Shane and Liz to flee on foot. Elsewhere, off-duty police sergeant Leo Barnes tells his ex-wife that he must Purge for revenge, and goes out into the streets heavily armed.

Moments after the Purge commenced, Eva and Cali watch a truck pull up and disgorge heavily armed paramilitary men into the neighborhood. A drunken maintenance man, who felt slighted by Eva in the past, bursts into their apartment intending to assault them, but is killed by paramilitary men who take both Eva and Kali, to be personally purged by their leader "Big Daddy". Leo drives by, kills all of the paramilitary men, wounds Big Daddy, and rescues Eva and Kali. Returning to Leo's car, they find Shane and Liz hiding in the back seat. Leo tries to kick them out, but must take them all when Big Daddy begins firing a Gatling gun at them, though the damage disables his car within a few blocks, as armor piercing bullets were used. When Eva promises that she can get him another car at the apartment of her co-worker, Tanya, Leo agrees to take them there on foot in exchange for Tanya's car.

The five survive intense street fights against purgers, and they also notice many dead paramilitary men killed by the anti-Purge resistance. When the group reaches Tanya's apartment, Eva reveals that there is no car. Tanya's sister, Lorraine, suddenly shoots Tanya for sleeping with Lorraine's husband. As the group flees, Big Daddy, who has been tracking them through traffic cameras, arrives with more armed guards. The groups evades Big Daddy, only to be captured by the gang that had been pursuing Liz and Shane.

The gang reveals that they were not trying to kill Shane, Eva, Cali, Liz and Leo, but are transporting them to a death chamber where they are paid. They deliver the group to a theater where upper-class Purgers bid on the right to kill them. They are taken to a chamber, to be hunted for sport. The group is able to kill and drive off the Purgers, but the elite's security forces swarm the chamber, killing Shane. Anti-Purge resistance fighters, led by Carmelo and Dwayne, storm the compound, shoot the security guards to death and rescues the group, revealing a significant armed revolt. Liz chooses to stay with the resistance fighters to avenge Shane. Leo, Eva, and Cali take a rich Purger's car and leave.

Leo finally arrives at the house of Warren Grass, the man who killed Leo's son while drunk driving a year earlier. Leo attacks Grass and his wife in their bedroom, but forgives Grass and spares his life. Leaving the house, Leo is shot and wounded by Big Daddy. Big Daddy reveals that the New Founding Fathers believe that the Purge is not killing off enough of the lower class and have been secretly sending out death squads to increase the body count. He informs Leo of the unwritten rule: do not save people. As Big Daddy is about to kill Leo, Grass steps out of his house and kills Big Daddy. Eva, Cali, Grass have a standoff with Big Daddy's death squad when the siren sounds to announce that the 12-hour Purge has concluded. The death squad leaves the scene, while Grass, Eva, and Cali rush Leo to the hospital as emergency services begin the clean up of the Annual Purge.

The Signal is a 2014 American science fiction thriller film directed byWilliam Eubank and co-written with Carlyle Eubank and David Frigerio. The film stars Brenton Thwaites and Laurence Fishburne. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically in the United States on June 13, 2014.[4] The film is among an increasing number of low-budget,[1] independent science fiction films to be included at the Sundance Film Festival in recent years.[5][6]

Plot[edit]

Three MIT students – Jonah, Nic, and Haley – are on a road trip to take Haley to California, a decision that's stressing Nic and Haley's relationship. Haley feels Nic is distancing himself from her and Nic explains he doesn't want his disability to hold her back (the possibility of muscular dystrophymultiple sclerosis, or some other degenerative disease is implied but never specified). During their stay in a hotel, Nic and Jonah discover that the hacker NOMAD (who nearly got Jonah and Nic expelled for breaking into MIT servers), has found their location and is taunting them with strange and ominous emails. They track NOMAD to an abandoned house in the middle of Nevada near their path and decide to go after him. After finding nothing in the house, Nic and Jonah hear Haley scream and run outside, only to see her pulled into the sky before disappearing into a white light themselves.

Nic, now with the number 2.3.5.41 tattooed on his arm, wakes up in a strange and sterile underground research facility where he is questioned by Dr. Wallace Damon, the head of the "transition group" in charge of helping Nic to cope with his strange situation. Damon tells Nic what they encountered near the house was an EBE: an extraterrestrial biological entity. Nic remains in a state of disbelief. Dr. Damon then shows him footage from Nic's own video camera and pauses where an EBE can be seen hiding behind a tree, looking at him. Nic is taken to his room where he hears Jonah talking to him through a small vent in the wall, saying "(his) body feels weird." Nic also notices that his legs, previously weak but functional, are now completely numb. When Dr. Damon questions him again, Nic tries to get answers about Haley's condition (she is in a coma at the time), but is unsuccessful. Following an unexplained experiment on a cow in another part of the facility, a security alarm goes off and Nic, along with other personnel, finds large scorch marks running across the walls and no sign of Jonah. Nic asks Damon where Jonah went but Damon tells him that Jonah was never recovered from the house. Increasingly agitated, Nic tries to break Haley out but is intercepted. After being restrained, he's shocked to discover that his legs have been amputated and replaced by prostheses made from alien technology. Nic then uses these super-powered limbs to break Haley and himself out of the facility, only to discover they're in the middle of a vast barren desert.

After hitching a ride with an old lady who seems sweet yet oddly troubled, Nic and Haley hijack an 18-wheeler truck to try to find a way around the seemingly endless canyon that extends around the facility and surrounding area. At a visitor's center, they come across Jonah disguised as one of the facility workers dressed in a whiteHAZMAT suit. Jonah reveals that he too had limbs taken from him, as his forearms and hands have been replaced with the same alien technology as Nic's legs. Jonah speculates that they're all in Area 51 and that this is all a test. After Nic discovers indications of alien technology also implanted in Haley's spine, the trio drive up to a military checkpoint where Jonah tries to hack into their systems, only to be stopped by a hail of gunfire from the facility personnel. Nic and Jonah hug as the fatally wounded Jonah prepares for his final stand that will allow Nic and Haley to escape. Jonah uses his remaining strength and prosthetic alien arms to subdue the group of soldiers. However, Nic and Haley's escape is short-lived; as they approach the only bridge that would take them over the canyon to the outside world, they run into Damon and his military men, who blow out the truck's tires. Haley is evacuated by helicopter beyond the canyon and, knowing that Nic has mastered use of his legs, Damon tells Nic "you can't reach her." After hearing a loud horn coming from the sky, Nic realizes Damon is NOMAD. Damon then explains that it was Nic who came looking for him, that this was his fault, and adding that Nic is "the perfect integration of human will and alien technology. Our finest achievement." Agitated and emotionally compromised, Nic's bionic legs enable him to sprint at supersonic speed across the bridge in the direction of Haley's chopper where he hits an invisible barrier and breaks through.

Nic finds himself inside what appears to be a different facility behind a projected image of the outside world beyond the canyon. Turning back toward the bridge, he sees Damon remove his helmet to reveal he's actually a robotic alien. Nic walks towards a window and realizes he isn't in a facility, but is on an alien space habitatnumbered 2.3.5.41 (matching the numerical tattoo on his arm) that is about to dock at their home-world (signaled by the horn).

Cast[edit]

Themes[edit]

The filmmakers have stated that they wrote the film as primarily an exploration of the conflict between logic andemotion. Director William Eubank stated in an interview, "The Signal, for me, is about choices and sort of what drives somebody – the decisions we make, whether we make them based on thinking logically or thinking emotionally. Nic is sort of a character who's being – he wants to be logical, because he believes from his computer background that that is a stronger way to live your life, and that's a more reasonable way to live your life. Black and white decisions, yes or nos. Then he's sort of challenged to make an emotional choice. At the very start, he was sort of trying to push those emotions away... At the end of the movie, he chooses to embrace that emotional side and make a choice based on a feeling."[10]

Co-writer Carlyle Eubank explained the film similarly saying "The real crux of the film is how the characters... find who they are as people through adversity".[11]

Actor Brenton Thwaites claimed the films metaphoric message of following one's heart over reason was what drew him to the project saying "I love the little messages and metaphors throughout the film that tell you to really chase what you believe in and follow your heart... the message is so beautiful".[12]

Screenwriter David Frigerio echoed his co-writers sentiments in his explanation of the film's themes:

Once Singularity hits and people start getting really smart, like a million times smarter than we are now—and that might not be that far off in the distance...where does that put human emotions? Because let's face it, if you're dealing in science alone, emotions are a waste of time because they just block you down. So that was one of our big questions. We got these kids from MIT. This kid has everything going for him... and then he's struck down with this muscular dystrophy and now his whole life is different. And he's trying to deal with it... only to realize later it's his emotions that make him human, to be who he is. We really wanted to emphasize that.[13]

Through metaphor the film intends to explore the idea that though sometimes humans may attempt to live their lives based on rules and logic, working diligently to suppress their feelings, deep down there are emotions that cannot be eliminated. The so-called "Signal" is that internal gnawing fire of a human's inner voice that can tell us what is true if we listen for it and that makes us humans. Eubank explains the meaning of the film's title, saying the "Signal" is a "waiting for something, listening for something, having an open heart... there's levels of what the 'Signal' really is".[14]

In the film, the character Nic finally listens and hears "The Signal" and in a fiery burst Nic discovers his true feelings:love. Having found his true emotions, Nic chooses to follow a course of action based on love. Eubank discusses this claim saying the critical part of the film is "to watch [Nic] arc out, to decide 'You know what, I’ve been trying to think logically about this the whole time... and [have] always been trying to run away from my emotions, here’s a situation that says logically I shouldn’t do this or I’m at great risk if I do this, so logically I should do nothing.' And he decides to do something, and to go for it, and he embraces it."[15] This decision flies in the face of logic but trusting love empowers him and this transformation enables him to break out of the allegorical cave of darkness he had formerly found himself in and out into the wide field of reality.

At Sundance,[16] the filmmakers and actor Brenton Thwaites described the film as a Twilight Zone–style story drawing heavily on Plato's Allegory of the Cave intended as a modern interpretation of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, later noted by reviewers.[17][18][19]

The filmmakers have stated the movie was constructed as a metaphor for the conflict between rational and emotional decision-making, contained inside a science-fiction genre vehicle.[10][12][20] The film wanders into somenontraditional storytelling directions which has frustrated some reviewers.[21]

Production[edit]

Casting[edit]

Laurence Fishburne joined the cast on May 9, 2013.[7]

Filming[edit]

The shooting of the film began in May 2013 in New Mexico, filming locations include AlbuquerqueLos Lunas andTaos.[8] The New Mexico Film Office also announced the start of filming.[22] On 18 and 19 June crews were filming the scenes on Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.[23]

Music[edit]

The musical score for The Signal was written by composer and experimental musical instrument designer Nima Fakhrara.[24] Fakhrara, who has a background as a dulcimer player and student of Persian classical music, approached the production seeking to contribute having been a fan of Eubank's earlier film Love.[25]

As half of the film takes place indoors, Fakhara produced a number of custom instruments for the film designed to limit resonance, including a pagoda made of ceramic insulatorsgongs, a number of bowed instruments, a steelmarimba, and a tenor violin fashioned with viola strings.[25] When the characters journey outdoors, the music and instruments were changed. A number of the custom instruments had to be transported to Skywalker Ranch, where Fakhrara was mastering the score.[25] The music supervisor was Aminé Ramer.

Fakhrara and Eubank went through 45 versions of the music for the opening credits scene before they chose a final version.[25]

A soundtrack album was released by Varèse Sarabande on June 10, 2014.[26]

Other songs featured in the film include:[27]

  • "La villa dei delitti" by Gabriele Bazzi Berneri
  • "Tell Me Now" by Generationals
  • "Union" by Deptford Goth
  • "Piano Piece in A Major" by Mark Gordon
  • "Pace, Pace, Mio Dio (From La forza del destino)" by Emilie De Voght
  • "I'll Pretend" by Glen Morris
  • "Ever Night Lulu" by Johnny Appleseed
  • "2.3.5.41 (feat. William Grundler)" by Nima Fakhrara & Free the Robots

Distribution[edit]

Marketing[edit]

On March 18, 2014, a teaser poster and some photos from the film were released,[28] followed by the first official trailer next day.[29] On March 26, 2014, Focus revealed a new poster for the film.[30] On May 27, "ruagitated.com"was launched.[31]

Theatrical release[edit]

Focus Features released the film, worldwide, on June 13, 2014.[4] It was in limited release in North America for five weeks and grossed $600,896.[2]

Home media[edit]

The Signal was released in a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD combo pack on September 23, 2014 by Focus Features and Universal Studios Home Entertainment.[32][needs update] It earned $822,917 in video sales in the United States.[33]

Reception[edit]

The Signal received mixed reviews from critics. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 58% of 79 film critics have given the film a positive review; the average rating is 5.8 out of 10. The site's consensus says, "Director William Eubank clearly has big ideas and an impressive level of technical expertise; unfortunately, The Signal fritters them away on a poorly constructed story."[34] The film has a score of 53 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 30 reviews.[35]

Entertainment Weekly gave the film a "B" rating, saying, "Hard science fiction meets tender hearts in a slow-burn, twist-filled thriller... The trio wind up in an abandoned shack in the middle of the Nevada desert, where they are attacked by forces unknown. It gets worse!... What is happening? Will Nic escape? And do we even want him to, given that the facility's workers all wear protective suits when interacting with their guests/test subjects?" The review concludes that "all this sounds like a souped-up episode of The Twilight Zone or The X-Files."[36]

Nicolas Rapold of The New York Times wrote, "William Eubank's The Signal demonstrates the fine line between paranoid science-fiction fantasy and demo reel... After a brief excursion into found-footage horror, Nic wakes up in one of those antiseptic, white-walled secret compounds used for human experimentation in the movies. Mr. Eubank plays with our minds, and Nic's, for a while," but Rapold judges that "the story evolves into a kind of poor man's X-Men. However, Rapold concludes, "The grandiosity of the film's setups partly fits in with the guys' sense of righteous-geek drama, and you wouldn't be surprised to see Mr. Eubank directing a bigger-budget movie down the road..."[37]

Michael O'Sullivan of The Washington Post gave the film a mere star-and-a-half rating and a half-scathing review: "Two of the major plot turns in The Signal—a good-looking sci-fi thriller with more fashion sense than brains—hinge on misdirection involving simple arithmetic and spelling. I won't spoil the fun by elaborating further, but when each moment arrives, it's cheapened by the implicit insult to the audience's intelligence. The twists feel less like jolts of genuine surprise than like being had by a third-grader with a good knock-knock joke." O'Sullivan adds, "I'll say one thing: The general state of confusion fostered by the head-scratching plot is a surprisingly effective way of maintaining continued engagement with it—if by 'engagement' you mean 'This better lead somewhere.' Oh, it does. It's just a less than wholly satisfying destination, despite some fun detours. (Veteran character actress Lin Shay, in a nutty little cameo, is one such pleasure.)"[38]

In contrast, USA Today wrote, "Had Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch made a movie together, it might have looked something like The Signal. Visually stunning, emotionally stunted and weird as all get-out, this sci-fi tale (**1/2 stars out of four, rated PG-13...) isn't worthy of the canon of either master of disturbing imagery. But Signal thinks big, takes chances and has enough arresting scenes to stand apart from the science fiction films of late... Signal is so determined to remain mysterious—and pack a visual punch at the movie's climax—that it withholds too much... Instead, Signal aims to get you thinking. The story can be maddening to follow, but it sure is cool to look at."[39]

Geoff Berkshire, who watched the film at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, gave a similarly admiring yet disappointed review, calling it "Indebted to both District 9 and The Blair Witch Project, but unlikely to enjoy either of those films' sleeper success": "Exceedingly stylish and ultimately quite silly, The Signal is a sci-fi head trip better appreciated for the journey than the destination. The less audiences know going in, the more intrigued they'll be by the story's not entirely predictable twists and turns." He writes that when "the film pulls its flashiest twist, which turns Nic into something like the Six Billion Dollar Teen," "it's also the clear highlight of a film more interested in surface flash than in narrative coherence or character depth."[40]

Black and white decisions, yes or nos. Then he's sort of challenged to make an emotional choice. At the very start, he was sort of trying to push those emotions away... At the end of the movie, he chooses to embrace that emotional side and make a choice based off of a feeling.

Strangerland is a 2015 Australian-Irish drama suspense film directed by Kim Farrant and written by Michael Kinirons and Fiona Seres.[1] The film stars Nicole KidmanJoseph Fiennes, and Hugo Weaving. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on 23 January 2015[2] and is scheduled to be released in a limited release and through video on demand on 10 July 2015 by Alchemy.[3]

Plot[edit]

Catherine and Matthew Parker move with their children Lily and Tom to the remote Australian desert town of Nathgari. Although the family is unhappy with the move, Matthew and Tom blame Lily for forcing them to leave Canberra. When he can't sleep, Tom sometimes walks around the neighborhood at night, an activity his parents discourage. One night, Matthew sees Tom leave the house, followed by Lily. He says nothing and goes back to sleep. Catherine oversleeps, and when she cannot find the kids, calls Matthew at work. He reassures her that they must have gone to school before she woke up. When the school calls to report that Tom and Lily have not been attending, she once again becomes worried, as a sandstorm is scheduled to hit the town. Matthew discourages her from contacting anyone, as he does not wish the family's business to once again become public knowledge. Against his wishes, Catherine contacts several people and finally the police.

While taking their report, Detective David Rae finds that Lily has once before been reported missing, Catherine and Matthew reluctantly reveal that she had disappeared for a few days and turned up at a friend's house. After further investigation, Rae learns that one of Lily's Canberra teachers, Neil McPherson, had sex with her. When Matthew found out, he beat up McPherson. The Parkers admit to Rae that they left Canberra to escape the attention. Catherine becomes frustrated with Matthew's focus on his job, though he insists that he has no choice. Rae's queries in town reveal that Lily had multiple sexual relationships despite being underage. When Catherine finds Lily's diary, it includes pictures and poetry about several people: McPherson, the Parker's mentally handicapped handyman Burtie, and a local youth nicknamed Slug. It also describes her parents' marriage as a sham, which causes Catherine to cry. Catherine hands the diary to Rae with the proviso that he not reveal it to Matthew.

Matthew drives to Canberra and threatens McPherson. Coreen, Rae's girlfriend and Burtie's sister, becomes annoyed when Rae won't share details of the case with her. Rae secretly shreds the evidence that connects Burtie to Lily and discourages Burtie from telling him anything incriminating. Rae arrests Slug, but without any evidence must release him. When the kids remain missing, the town organizes a search party. Matthew refuses to participate, further angering Catherine. Rae suggests to Catherine that her children could have run away for a reason. Catherine confronts Matthew with Lily's sexual history and asks if he molested her. Incredulous, he denies it and asks why she would even ask; she cites his apparent reluctance to help find the kids. Knowing now that Burtie had a sexual relationship with Lily, Matthew beats up Burtie and searches his house. Coreen demands Rae arrest Matthew, and when she accuses him of taking the Parkers' side, Rae reveals Burtie's connection.

Burtie visits the Parkers and asks to speak with Matthew. Catherine invites him in, but he leaves when she attempts to seduce him in Lily's clothes. When Matthew drives into the desert alone, he finds Tom dehydrated and delirious. Tom initially refuses to speak, and Catherine yells at him; Tom eventually tells Matthew that he saw Lily get into a car. Catherine listens as locals discuss Lily's disappearance and likely death, and becomes distraught when she receives prank calls that call Lily promiscuous. She visits Rae, and when she fails to seduce him, wanders into the desert alone. She later reappears in town, naked. In bed together, as they hold each other, Catherine admits that she hid the diary from Matthew, and Matthew admits he saw the kids leave at night. He says he did not stop them because he wanted to punish Lily. Catherine hugs Tom and walks onto the porch, where she and Matthew console each other. While holding Lily's diary, Matthew cries and says that he wishes he could take back an hour.

The Intern is a 2015 American comedy film directed by Nancy Meyers. The film stars Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in the two leading roles, with supporting performances from Rene RussoAnders Holm,Andrew RannellsAdam DeVine, Christina Scherer, and Zack Pearlman. The film was released on September 25, 2015 by Warner Bros.[3]

Plot[edit]

70-year-old widower Ben Whitaker (Robert De Niro), a retired executive at a phone directory company, applies to a senior citizen intern program after retirement has gotten too boring for him. The company he applies to is About the Fit, a fast-growing e-commercefashion company, whose founder and CEO Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway) had previously agreed to a community outreach program where seniors will intern at the firm. Ben impresses everyone and is one of four hired.

Ben is assigned to work with Jules, who is somewhat skeptical of him at first. Initially frozen out by Jules, Ben slowly wins the office over with his likeability and one day, after clearing the office junk table, gets into Jules' good graces. One day, Ben notices Jules' chauffeur drinking outside his parked vehicle. He convinces the driver to go home early and drives Jules home himself, a role he retains when the chauffeur is nowhere to be found the next day. Ben eventually reveals that he once worked in the very same building where About The Fit is now based as well as developing a romantic relationship with the in-house massage therapist, Fiona (Rene Russo) and becomes something of a father figure to the younger workers. He is very committed to Jules, and even breaks into the house of Jules' mother with his band of co-workers to delete an embarrassingly scathing email that Jules inadvertently sent her. Ben also gets to know Jules' family. Her husband, Matt (Anders Holm), gave up his own high flying career to be astay-at-home dad to their daughter, Paige (JoJo Kushner) when About The Fit started to take off. However, their marriage is shown to be slowly breaking apart over Jules' long hours, mainly caused by her very hands-on management style.

Meanwhile, Jules is under pressure to give up her post of CEO to someone outside of the company as her investors feel that she is unable to cope with the workload, having grown About The Fit from a startup founded in her kitchen to a 220-employee juggernaut in only 18 months. Believing it will give her more time at home with her family, Jules is willing to consider the offer. While driving Paige home from a party, Ben discovers that Matt is having an affair with another parent at Paige's school. While on a business trip in San Francisco to interview a potential CEO candidate, Jules reveals that she knows about Matt's cheating as well.

In an effort to buy herself the time to repair her marriage, Jules decides to hire a prospective CEO from San Francisco. When Jules goes to Ben's home the next day, Ben greatly encourages Jules to think about how much this will change her authority and how her creativity may be tampered with and also reminds her of her passion for her company. Matt unexpectedly drops in at the office and urges her to reconsider, saying that he is willing to make their marriage work. Jules goes out looking for Ben wanting to tell him that she has changed her mind and finds him obviously enjoying his Tai Chi exercise group. She finally lets herself relax and joins him.

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

Originally set up at Paramount PicturesThe Intern was planned to feature Tina Fey and Michael Caine in the lead roles. When a budget could not be settled, Meyers decided to pre-package before going out to other studios and was able to start negotiations for both actors.[4] Handed over to Warner Bros., Fey was replaced by Reese Witherspoon as the attached star, though Witherspoon left the film on January 15, 2014 due to scheduling conflicts.[4] As of February 7, Anne Hathaway was in final talks to replace Witherspoon in the lead role.[5] Stephen Goldblatt was set as director of photography.[6] On June 23, Zack Pearlman joined the cast of the film.[7]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography began on June 23, 2014 in BrooklynNew York City,[6][8] where De Niro was spotted on the set of the film.[9]

Marketing[edit]

The first trailer was released on May 13, 2015, and was later attached to showings of Me and Earl and the Dying GirlPitch Perfect 2 and Paper Towns.[10] On August 3, 2015, another trailer was released.[11]

Reception[edit]

Box office[edit]

As of December 17, 2015, The Intern has grossed $75.1 million in North America and $117.7 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $192.8 million, against a budget of $35 million.[2]

In its opening weekend, the film was projected to earn $15–20 million. It ended up grossing $17.7 million, finishing second at the box office behind fellow newcomer Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.5 million).[12]

Critical response[edit]

The Intern has received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 60%, based on 149 reviews, with an average rating of 5.7/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "The Intern doesn't do enough with its timely premise, but benefits from the unorthodox chemistry of its talented leads."[13] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 51 out of 100, based on 36 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[14] CinemaScore announced that audiences gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale.[15]

Richard Roeper gave the film an "A–", stating, "With some genuinely insightful dialogue, a number of truly funny bits of physical business, and small scenes allowing us to get know and like a half-dozen supporting players, The Intern grows us on from scene to scene, from moment to moment."

Manohla Dargis, in The New York Times, wrote that the film was typical of Nancy Meyers' other films: "frothy, playful, homogeneous, routinely maddening and generally pretty irresistible." Despite finding fault with "lazy screenwriting" and "Meyers’s conflicted ideas about powerful women," Dargis praised Meyers for "the smartest choice she makes in “The Intern”: Mr. De Niro, her loosest, most valuable player" who "owns the movie from the moment he opens his mouth." Hathaway's role was derided as "less of a character and more of a fast-walking, speed-talking collection of gender grievances."[16]

Clem Bastow, writing for The Guardian, suggested that poor reviews for the film were primarily coming from men, who form the overwhelming majority of film critics.[17]

Sicario is a 2015 American action thriller film directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Emily BluntBenicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin. Written by Taylor Sheridan, the film is about a principled FBI agent who is enlisted by a government task force to bring down the leader of a powerful and brutal Mexican drug cartelSicario was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Distributed by Lionsgate, the film began a limited release in the United States on September 18, 2015, prior to a nationwide release on October 2, 2015.

Plot[edit]

During an FBI SWAT raid of suspected kidnappers in Chandler, Arizona, idealistic agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt), her partner Reggie Wayne (Daniel Kaluuya), and their team discover dozens of corpses hidden within the walls of the house. While the team investigates the crime scene, an improvised explosive device in the backyard shed explodes, killing two officers. Afterwards, Kate's boss, Dave Jennings (Victor Garber), recommends her to Matt Graver (Josh Brolin), a CIASpecial Activities Division undercover officer and Department of Defense adviser leading a team of Delta Force operators searching for the men responsible, including cartel boss Manuel Díaz. Kate volunteers to join the team.

On the plane to El Paso, Texas, Kate meets Matt's partner, Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro), and learns that they are going to Juárez,Mexico, where they will extradite one of Diaz's top men, his brother Guillermo. While crossing back into the United States over the Bridge of the Americas, Matt, Alejandro, and their team realize that cartel thugs are attempting to intercept them in a traffic jam, and the team kills the cartel men when they attempt to capture Guillermo. After interrogating and torturing Guillermo, Matt and Alejandro learn the location of Díaz's hideout.

Alejandro, Matt, and Kate return to Arizona, where Reggie drives them to a Border Patrol station to question a group of Mexican migrants for information. Tired of being kept in the dark about the greater objectives of the mission, Reggie and Kate confront Alejandro and Matt for an explanation. Matt tells them that their goal is to cause such a disruption in Díaz's drug operations that he will be called back to Mexico to meet with his boss, drug lord Fausto Alarcón (Julio Cedillo). With the help of several migrants who know the border well, the team discovers the whereabouts of a tunnel that the cartel uses to get its drugs into the United States. The team follows Díaz's money launderers to a bank, where they deposit his money and are arrested. Díaz's accounts are then frozen. Kate, believing they can arrest Díaz with this information, gets records of the transactions, but Matt forbids her from going forward, telling her that they are working toward a greater goal than simply arresting Díaz.

After being refused by Matt to move forward with the arrest, Kate and Reggie meet with Jennings for further answers. He informs them that the decision to follow Matt's orders wasn't made by him, but rather by elected officials far away from the situation at hand. In an effort to further satisfy Kate, Jennings informs her to stop worrying about wrongfully crossing legal boundaries because the legal boundaries they once knew had been purposefully moved.

Frustrated with the way Matt and Alejandro work, Reggie and Kate visit a bar for drinks. Reggie introduces Kate to one of his buddies, a local cop named Ted (Jon Bernthal). After a night of drinking and dancing, Ted and Kate end up back at her apartment, where she discovers a rubber wristband in his possession—the same type used to bundle Díaz's laundered money. Sensing that she knows he is corrupt, Ted struggles to subdue her and nearly chokes her to death. Alerted by the noise, Alejandro stops him at gunpoint and beats him up. After Alejandro and Matt threaten the lives of Ted and his family, he reveals the names of other local corrupt cops working for Díaz.

The next morning, Matt and his team prepare to follow Díaz, who has been called back to Alarcón. Kate protests that the FBI does not have jurisdiction in Mexico and learns that she and Reggie are no longer needed; the FBI agents were attached to the team purely to give the CIA the legal ability to operate within US borders. Reggie tells Kate they should leave the operation, as they were being used from the beginning, but Kate wishes to see things through to the end. Their raid on the tunnel serves as a distraction so that Alejandro can sneak through to the Mexican side. Once there, he kidnaps one of Díaz's mules, a corrupt Mexican police officer named Silvio (Maximiliano Hernández). Kate follows and attempts to arrest Alejandro, who shoots her in her bulletproof vest and tells her to return to the United States. Threatening Silvio at gunpoint, Alejandro forces him to pursue Díaz in his Mexican police car. Meanwhile, Kate demands answers from Matt, who explains that their goal is to restore power to the Colombian Medellín Cartel. Returning control of the drug trade to a single cartel will restore some semblance of order.

Alejandro with Silvio driving catches up with Díaz's Mercedes, upon which Alejandro kills Silvio and wounds Díaz. Díaz then drives Alejandro to Alarcón's estate, where Alejandro kills Díaz and Alarcón's guards before finding Alarcón and his family. Alarcón, who murdered Alejandro's wife and daughter when Alejandro was a prosecutor in Juárez, mocks Alejandro, who shoots Alarcón's wife and two sons to death in front of him, then kills the drug lord. The next morning, Alejandro sneaks back into Kate's apartment and gives her a waiver to sign stating that everything they did together was "by the book". Kate relents when Alejandro puts a gun to her head. After he leaves, Kate goes to her balcony, points her gun at him and hesitates, and then watches him walk away. Sometime later at a football field in Mexico, Silvio's widow watches her son's soccer game, which is briefly interrupted by gunfire in the distance. However, despite this, the soccer game continues on as normal.

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

In December 2013, it was announced that Denis Villeneuve would direct a Mexican border drama, Sicario (the Spanish word for Hitman[4]), scripted by Taylor Sheridan. Black Label Media financed and co-produced with Thunder Road Pictures.[5] Basil Iwanyk produced the film along with Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill.[5]

Emily Blunt signed on to the film in April 2014, shortly followed by Benicio del Toro.[6][7] Jon Bernthal and Josh Brolin joined the film in May, and cinematographer Roger Deakins was also hired.[8][9][10] Daniel Kaluuya,Maximiliano Hernández, and Jeffrey Donovan were then cast,[11][12][13] and Jóhann Jóhannsson was hired to compose the music for the film in August 2014.[14]

Principal photography began on June 30, 2014 in AlbuquerqueNew Mexico.[15][16]

Release[edit]

In May 2014, Lionsgate acquired the U.S. rights to the film, while Lionsgate International will handle the foreign sales.[17] On February 23, 2015, Lionsgate set the film for a limited release in the United States on September 18, 2015 and a wide release on October 2, 2015.[18] The film had its world premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festivalon May 19, 2015.[19][20] It was then selected to be shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2015.[21][22]

Reception[edit]

Box office[edit]

As of December 13, 2015, Sicario has grossed $46.4 million in North America and $33.7 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $80.1 million, against a budget of $30 million.[3]

In the opening weekend of its wide release, the film was projected to earn $8–10 millon. On its first day, it grossed $4.3 million, coming in third behind The Martian ($18 million) and Hotel Transylvania 2 ($7.5 million). In its opening weekend, it grossed $12.1 million, exceeding expectations and finishing behind The Martian ($54.3 million) andHotel Transylvania 2 ($33.2 million).[23]

Critical response[edit]

Sicario has been acclaimed by critics and the performances of Blunt and del Toro were praised.[24] On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 93%, based on 207 reviews, with an average rating of 8/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Led by outstanding work from Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro, Sicario is a taut, tightly wound thriller with much more on its mind than attention-getting set pieces."[25]On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 81 out of 100, based on 41 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[26] On CinemaScore, audiences gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale.[23]

Richard Roeper gave the film an A, calling it one of the year's best, and applauded del Toro's performance, saying, "...then there's del Toro, who lurks about the fringes of the action for most of the story, and then springs into action in a handful of scenes in a variety of ways that will leave you shaken — and grateful to have seen such beautifully dark work."[27]

Dan Jolin from Empire gave the film 5 stars, calling it "a beautifully murky, hard-edged thriller. Quite simply, one of the best films of the year."[28]

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian praised the acting of Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin. He states that although her character Kate Mercer was implausible, Emily Blunt "brazens out any possible absurdity with great acting focus and front".[29]

Similarly, Sebastian Rotella, writing for Propublica, offered considerable praise to the acting of Blunt, del Toro, and Brolin. However, he found that the film, while "artful and thought-provoking" and as having "impeccably realistic moments", possesses several deficiencies. Firstly, the federal agents' aggressive tactics and breaches in rules in Sicario are far more gratuitous than anything he witnessed in his reporting. Secondly, there exists a lack of Hispanic law enforcement agents, as characters, in the film relative to those currently working in real life. Finally, the film focuses overwhelmingly on the American point of view in the War on Drugs.[30]

Steve Pulaski of Influx Magazine gave the film a B-, stating that the lack of character development was off putting despite extremely strong cinematography and stylish directing. He went on to say that, "Sicario may be one of the most melancholic, morally bankrupt, and ethically vacuous mainstream films to be released this year; yet, such moroseness comes with the territory of the ongoing, politician-branded 'War on Drugs.'"[31]

Chris Ryan of Grantland compares Sicario to the film Apocalypse Now directed by Francis Ford Coppola. He notes the similarity of the visuals with respect to the respective narratives of the two films. He also states that the characters Alejandro Gillick and Matt Graver in Sicario are similar to those of Colonel Kurtz and William Kilgore, respectively in Apocalypse Now.[32]

Response from officials in Ciudad Juarez[edit]

Sicario's depiction of Ciudad Juárez was criticized by officials of that city, who believed the film depicted their city in a bad light. The film included sequences depicting cadavers hanging from downtown viaducts and nighttime firefights in the city. Those officials believe that, at the time of the film's release, the intensity of criminal activity in the city had considerably declined relative to previous periods.[30]

Examination of the US War on Drugs[edit]

According to Sebastian Rotella, Sicario examined many aspects of the war on drugs engaged by United Statesagainst, most generally, drug cartels in MexicoCentral America, and South America. Taking a perspective as an American, he writes that the film illustrates how the American War on Drugs is "turning us into the very monsters we are trying to defeat." Furthermore, the situation in Mexico, with respect to illegal drug trafficking, has remained stagnant for two decades, as of the film's release. This point is repeatedly made by the character Matt Graver in the film.[30]

Sequel[edit]

Lionsgate has commissioned a sequel, centering on del Toro's character. The project is being overseen by writer Taylor Sheridan with Villeneuve also involved.[52]

Filming began in Albuquerque, New Mexico on October 27, 2014, and officially concluded on January 27, 2015.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was released in select international territories starting September 9, 2015 in 2D, 3D4DX and Barco Escape, and was released on September 18, 2015 in the United States in 2D and Premium Large Format theaters, by 20th Century Fox. The concluding entry, titled Maze Runner: The Death Cure, is scheduled to be released on February 17, 2017.

Plot

The film begins with a young boy, Thomas, taken in by Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) and troops from the organization WCKD, alongside other children, after being dropped off by his mother for his own safety. Years later, shortly after being rescued from the maze, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and the remaining Gladers - Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Teresa Agnes (Kaya Scodelario), Frypan (Dexter Darden) and Winston (Alexander Flores) - are taken to a facility run by Mr. Janson (Aidan Gillen). He explains that the facility is a safe haven, protecting them from WCKD, the Flare virus and the Cranks, and provides them clothes, food, and sanitation, where other survivors of multiple mazes are also present. Thomas becomes curious about their activities and manages to find out what is really happening behind the closed doors. With help from Aris Jones (Jacob Lofland), the first maze survivor to end up in the facility, it is revealed that WCKD's leader, Ava, is still alive and that Mr. Janson is working for WCKD, as they discuss about the experiment on the Immunes and that Janson has yet to find The Right Arm, a resistance group located at the mountains. The group, including Aris, escapes the facility, as Janson orders his WCKD troops to track them down, where they find themselves in the deserted outside world - the Scorch.

The group arrive at an abandoned marketplace, where they first encounter with the Cranks, humans zombified by the Flare virus. In the process, Winston gets infected by one of them. When morning comes, they find the city has turned into ruins and that WCKD is still searching for them. Winston's infection gets worse, forcing the rest of the group to leave him alone to die by shooting himself, preventing his transformation. As group continues to venture the desert until one night, while sleeping in the middle of the desert, Thomas awakens and discovers civilization from far away. As a thunderstorm emerges, they run to an abandoned facility to keep them from the storm. Minho gets struck by the lightning, but he survives. They manage to enter the place, only to find out that the facility they entered was filled with chained Cranks. The group meets Brenda (Rosa Salazar) and Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito), who lead a dangerous band of survivors and have used the Cranks as their own guard dogs. When the two find that the group had come from WCKD and is looking for the Right Arm, the two agree to take them to the Right Arm, abandoning their group of survivors. Moments later, WCKD, led by Janson, storms the place, only for the facility to be destroyed by Jorge's explosives, however, Thomas and Brenda are left behind as the rest have escaped with Jorge. Thomas and Brenda manage to escape the Cranks, only for Brenda to get infected by a Crank in the process. Thomas experiences a flashback of when he and Teresa were working for WCKD, in which Thomas tries to warn Teresa of WCKD's plans, only for the two to be separated by WCKD's troops. As Thomas and Brenda reunite with the rest of the group, Jorge interrogates Marcus (Alan Tudyk), a survivor who secretly works for WCKD, into revealing the whereabouts of The Right Arm.

The group eventually arrive at The Right Arm's relief camps, where other innocent survivors are present, and are greeted by Vince (Barry Pepper) who leads the Right Arm and is in charge of deciding whether they can stay or not. As Brenda's infection gets worse, Vince threatens to shoot Brenda, only to be stopped by Mary Cooper (Lili Taylor), a former WCKD scientist who reveals that Thomas was their informant. As Mary halts Brenda's infection using an enzyme cure, Mary explains that the enzyme can only be harvested from an Immune's body, not manufactured, and that arguments over the methods of manufacturing the cure with Ava lead Mary's departure from WCKD. That evening, Teresa calls WCKD of her location, believing that WCKD's motivations are good, leading to an ambush by WCKD. Ava and Janson arrive and confront the Right Arm before WCKD troops captures survivors for experimentation, including Minho, while Janson shoots Mary dead. After Thomas and the Right Arm fend the WCKD troops off, Ava, Janson and Teresa retreat with their captured survivors. With only a fraction of survivors left at the site, Thomas plans an infiltration into WCKD and is determined to take them down to save his friends and save civilization, as his friends and the Right Arm agree to help and prepare to fight back.

Pre-production

On October 13, 2013, almost a year before The Maze Runner's release, it was reported that Fox had started work on The Scorch Trials. It was revealed that T.S. Nowlin - who recently worked on the Fantastic Four reboot - would adapt Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, taking over from Noah Oppenheim, with returning director Wes Ball supervising Nowlin's script.

The early development of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials suggested to many that Fox was confident in the potential success of The Maze Runner.[5][6] On November 19, 2014, John Paesano was confirmed to return to score the film.[1] Creature designer Ken Barthelmey returned to design the creatures for the film.[7]

Casting

On September 26, 2014, Aidan Gillen was cast as the main antagonist of the film, Janson, also known as Rat-Man.[8]On September 30, 2014, Rosa Salazar signed on to the cast as Brenda.[9] Within the next few days, Mud star Jacob Lofland[10] and Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito[11] joined the cast, playing Aris Jones and Jorge, respectively.Game of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel was cast as Harriet, co-leader of Group B, on October 22, 2014,[12] andKatherine McNamara as the other co-leader on December 22.[13] On November 3, 2014, there were two additions to the cast, with Lili Taylor as Mary Cooper, a "doctor who helps Thomas and the Gladers",[14] and Barry Pepper as Vince, "a survivalist who is one of the last remaining soldiers of a legendary unit called the Right Arm".[15]

Filming

On July 25, 2014, Ball announced at San Diego Comic-Con International that the studio wants to start shooting in fall 2014, should its predecessor become a success when it hits theatres.[16]

On August 31, 2014, Ball announced they are "about nine weeks out from shooting". He also revealed "we are in New Mexico right now. We’ve got a crew and stages. We are rapidly approaching our shoot time. The sets are being built. A lot of the same crew is coming back. Most of the cast is coming back, except for the ones who were killed [in the first film]. The script is really coming along".[17] A week later, Ball told BuzzFeed that “we’ve got stages, we’ve got crews coming in, Dylan [O’Brien] will be back in a few weeks, we’re building sets, and the script is being written. It’s a bit of a race this time because we’re cautiously optimistic, but we’re feeling excited we’re about to do something that’s way more sophisticated, way more grown up, and really set up a saga here.”[18]

Principal photography commenced on October 27, 2014 in and around Albuquerque, New Mexico.[8][19][20] Filming finished on January 27, 2015, lasting 94 days.[21][22]

Soundtrack

Composed by John Paesano, the soundtrack was released on September 11, 2015.[23]

Release

On August 31, 2014, Ball revealed he is hoping "the movie will be out in about a year".[17] On September 21, 2014, it was announced the film would be released on September 18, 2015 in the United States.[24] The film was released in Barco's multi-screen immersive movie format Barco Escape in across 25 countries with approximately 20 minutes of the film converted into the format.[25] It was also released in the Dolby Vision format in Dolby Cinema in North America.[26]

Marketing

At San Diego Comic-Con International 2014, Ball released the first piece of concept art for the film.[27] Six stills were released on March 11, 2015.[28][29]

The first official trailer was released on April 23, 2015, at 20th Century Fox's CinemaCon.[30] However, it was not released online at the same time, but the 1 minute and 44 second teaser trailer premiered before Pitch Perfect 2 in May 2015.[31] The trailer was released publicly on May 19, 2015.[32][33] On July 10, 2015, a 30-minute sneak peek was screened at San Diego Comic Con International, with Ball, Dashner, and O'Brien also at the screening.

The Scorch Trials was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on December 15, 2015.[34]

Reception

Box office

As of December 20, 2015, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials has grossed $81.4 million in North America and $230.5 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $312 million, against a budget of $61 million.[4]

North America

In the United States and Canada, the film opened simultaneously with the crime films Black Mass and Captive. Preliminary reports predicted the film to open with takings of around $34—36 million.[35][36] It made $1.7 million from its late night screenings—55% ahead of the first film's $1.1 million—from 2,900 theaters[37][38] and an estimated $11 million on its opening day, which is lower than its predecessor's opening day.[39] It finished off the weekend with $30.3 million from 3,796 theaters which is lower than its predecessor's $32.5 million (-7%) opening in 2014. Nevertheless, the film opened at No. 1 at the box office ahead of its competitor Black Mass.[40] Premium large formats comprised $2.75 million (9%) of the opening gross from 270 PLF screens, while Cinemark XD contributed $825,000 of that figure in 87 screens.[41] The film relied on younger audiences, with 65 percent of the audience under the age of 25 and females making up 53 percent ticket buyers.[40] Also noteworthy was that Fox didn't have the IMAX screens like it did with the first installment, as they were all devoted to Everest which was getting a week-long "sneak preview" release in IMAX and large-format screens. But they did have 270 PLF screens, which made up 9% of the overall gross.[42] Deadline.com reported that Fox was nevertheless happy about the result.[41] The franchise follows a similar trajectory to The Divergent Series which dipped slightly from its first installment ($54.6 million) to second ($52.2 million) earlier this year.[43] Still, both the movies prove "the consistency of the young-adult audience," says Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak's senior analyst. "They're not growing at a huge rate, but we're also not seeing a massive drop-off."[43] In its second weekend, the film fell by 53% to $14 million slipping in third place behind Hotel Transylvania 2 ($47.5 million) and The Intern ($18.2 million). In comparison, The Maze Runner dropped 46% in its second weekend earning $17.4 million in 2014. The Scroch Trails 's 10 day gross stood af $51.69 million in relation to its predecessor's $57.9 million 10 day.[44]

Outside North America

Internationally, The Scorch Trials was released in a total of 76 countries.[45] It was released overseas a week before it opened in the U.S., and earned $26.7 million in its opening weekend from 21 markets in 5,586 screens and in all markets, outperforming its predecessor. It debuted at second place at the international box office, behind Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.[46] In its second weekend, it expanded to 41 additional markets and earned a total of $43.2 million from 12,699 screens in 66 markets, opening at No. 1 in 34 of the 41 markets as well as topping the international box office charts.[47] In South Korea, it had the biggest opening for Fox of 2015 with $7.2 million from 804 screens. That's 41% higher than its predecessor's opening.[47] France posted the highest opening for the film with $8.5 million followed by South Korea ($7.2 million) Russia and the CIS ($5.2 million), the United Kingdom, Ireland and Malta ($4.9 million), and Mexico ($4.4 million).[47][48][45] In terms of total earning, its largest market outside of the U.S. are South Korea ($18 million), France ($18.9 million) and the United Kingdom ($12.9 million).[49][45][50][51] It opened in China—it's last market—on November 4[45][52] and grossed an estimated $19.77 million on 4,945 screens in its five opening weekend ($14.6 million over three days) which is 60% above its's predecessor's opening.[53][54] It has grossed a total of $28.8 million in China.[55]

Critical response

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials received mixed reviews from critics. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 49%, based on 119 reviews, with an average rating of 5.4/10. The site's critical consensus states, "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is an action-packed sequel at the cost of story, urgency, and mystery that the original offered."[56] Metacritic gives the film a score of 43 out of 100, based on 29 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[57] Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale.[58]

The main criticisms of the film were its narrative and lack of character development.[59][60] Forbes said the film suffered from "middle movie syndrome", claiming that it did not offer an introduction nor a finale.[61] The Wrapstated that, "it doesn’t offer much plot or character development".[62] Stephen Kelly of Total Film said, "Scorch Trialsambitiously opens up its world with mixed results: gripping action, so-so script."[63] Walter Addiego of San Francisco Chronicle said, "there’s lots of eye candy, and the pace is fast, but somehow the movie falls short."[64]

However, some critics considered it to be an improvement over its predecessor, highlighting its action sequences and performances.[65][66] John Williams of New York Times wrote, "the many chases and ludicrous narrow escapes offer respectable doses of adrenaline",[67] and Brian Truitt of USA Today said, "Maze Runner 's action, suspense and twists give movie fans of all ages a chance to embrace their inner on-the-run teenager."[68] Rafer Guzman ofNewsday said, "the teen dystopian franchise continues to play rough, and now even rougher, with satisfying results."[69] Bilge Ebiri of Vulture said "essentially, The Scorch Trials makes up for the humdrum YApocalypse of its first half by going a little bonkers in its second."[70]

The Walk is a 2015 American 3D biographical drama film directed byRobert Zemeckis and written by Christopher Browne and Zemeckis. It is based on the story of French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on August 7, 1974. The film stars Joseph Gordon-LevittBen KingsleyCharlotte Le BonJames Badge DaleBen Schwartz, and Steve Valentine. The film was released by TriStar Pictures on September 30, 2015, in the United States in IMAX 3D, and on October 9 in regular 2D and 3D. The film was dedicated to the victims of the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Plot[edit]

In 1973, French street performer Philippe Petit is trying to make a living in Paris with juggling acts and wire walking, much to the chagrin of his father. During one performance, he eats a hard candy which was given to him by an audience member and injures his tooth. He visits the dentist and, while in the waiting room, sees a picture in a magazine of the Twin Towers in New York City. He analyzes the photo and decides to make it his mission to walk a tightrope between the two buildings. Meanwhile, he is evicted from his parents' house by his father, citing his lack of income and the fact that he's a street performer. Philippe returns to the circus that inspired him to wire walk as a child and practices in the big top after hours, but is caught by Papa Rudy, whom he impresses with his juggling skills. While performing one day, Philippe meets a beautiful woman and fellow street performer named Annie, and they begin a romantic relationship. He also explains that although he didn't know it at the time, she was his first "accomplice". He tells Annie about his dream to walk between the towers of the World Trade Center and she supports him and gives him a perfect place to practice at her music school. Philippe meets a photographer named Jean-Louis and befriends him, becoming Philippe's official photographer and second accomplice in his "coup".

Philippe requests Papa Rudy for tips and advice on knot tying and rope rigging, which Papa Rudy agrees to for compensation. After failing his first real performance by falling into a lake, Philippe decides to attempt to walk on the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris to redeem himself. He succeeds with the support of Jean-Louis but is arrested in the process. Jean-Louis introduces Jeff, another accomplice who has a fear of heights, to Philippe and Annie, while explaining his idea to use a bow and arrow tied to a fishing line to get the cable across the Towers. Philippe and Annie then travel to America, setting the date for the walk as August 6, 1974. Philippe dresses in disguises to spy on the construction crews and scout out the locations, impaling his foot on a nail in the process. At one point, he meets a man who reveals he is a fan of Philippe's and saw him at Notre Dame. He introduces himself as Barry Greenhouse, a life insurance salesman who works in the building, becoming another member of Philippe's team. They also meet French-speaking electronics salesman J.P. and his friends, amateur photographer Albert, and stoner David. The gang goes over the plan several times, ending with the notion that Philippe must be on the wire before the construction crews arrive at 7:00 AM.

On the eve of the event, the gang encounters several speed bumps, such as being three hours behind schedule, guards on the premises and nearly dropping the heavy cable off the roof. However, they successfully string up the ropes and set the cables. Philippe begins his walk, explaining that everything around him faded once he started, except the wire and himself, and that for the first time in his life he felt truly thankful and at peace. He successfully crosses the gap between the towers while crowds below cheer him on. Once he reaches he has an urge to return, so he walks back again across the void. At one point he kneels to his audience and even lies down. The cops arrive, and threaten to remove him by helicopter if he doesn't get off but Philippe relentlessly continues to walk back and forth until he achieves the feat a total of six times. He is arrested on sight, with the police and construction workers commending him on his bravery. Philippe and his accomplices are eventually released and he decides to remain in New York, but Annie chooses to follow her dream, and return to Paris. The building manager gives Philippe a free pass to the observation decks of both towers, and Philippe gives a final look to the camera, with the Twin Towers in the background, as he says the expiry date on the pass was crossed out and changed to "forever".

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

On January 23, 2014, it was announced that Robert Zemeckis would direct a film based on the story of Philippe Petit's walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. It was also confirmed that Zemeckis wanted Joseph Gordon-Levitt to star in the film as Petit.[3] Zemeckis first came across the story of Petit from the children's book The Man Who Walked Between the Towers.[4] At first Zemeckis questioned whether or not the story was true as he did not recall the event saying he "somehow missed it".[4] Zemeckis immediately recognized the potential for a movie telling Deadline "To me, it had everything that you want in a movie. It had an interesting character who’s driven, and obsessed, and passionate. It had all this caper stuff. He was an outlaw. There was suspense. And then he did this death-defying thing."[4] By February 2014, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was confirmed to star in the film.[5] In April 2014, Charlotte Le BonBen Kingsley and James Badge Dale joined the cast of the film.[6]On May 6, 2014, it was announced that the film would be released on October 2, 2015.[7] In May 2014, Steve Valentine and Ben Schwartz joined the cast of the film.[8][9] Principal photography began on May 26, 2014, inMontreal, and ended on August 6, 2014.[10][11]

Philippe Petit personally trained Gordon-Levitt how to walk on wire. He optimistically predicted that the actor would be able to walk on the wire alone after an elaborate workshop of eight days, which the actor did.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who had no formal high-wire experience, trained directly with Philippe Petit. By the end of the eighth day, he was able to walk on the wire by himself, and continued to practice while shooting.[12] Along with a stunt double, the actor shot the climactic wire-walking scenes on a soundstage; it had reconstructions of the top two stories of the tower and a wire approximately twelve feet off the ground, which was connected out across a green abyss and was anchored on a pole.[12] To learn more about what it was like, Gordon-Levitt also walked the distance between the World Trade Center memorial's two pools, which are located where the Twin Towers stood before the September 11 attacks. He visited the original observatory once before, in 2001, during his first summer in New York City. "It was touristy but I wanted to go do it. I remember it distinctly. It felt more like being in the sky than being on a tall building."[12] Aside from wire-walking, Gordon-Levitt also learned to speak French fluently, perfecting a Parisian accent aided by his co-star Charlotte Le Bon and other French actors on set.[12]

Release[edit]

The film premiered at the New York Film Festival on September 26, 2015.[13]It had an early release at IMAX theaters on September 30, 2015, before a wide theatrical release on October 9, 2015.[14]

Reception[edit]

Box office[edit]

As of November 8, 2015, The Walk has grossed over $10.1 million in North America and $31 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $41.1 million, against a budget of $35 million.[2]

The film was released into IMAX theaters on Wednesday, September 30, 2015. In the opening weekend of its limited release, the film grossed $1.6 million, finishing 11th at the box office. During the first weekend of its wide release a week later, the film grossed $3.7 million, coming in seventh.[15]

Critical response[edit]

The Walk has received positive reviews from critics, with praise for Gordon-Levitt's performance, Zemeckis' direction, and the visual effects, particularly during the wire walk scene. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 85%, based on 203 reviews, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "The Walk attempts a tricky balancing act between thrilling visuals and fact-based drama – and like its wire-walking protagonist, pulls it off with impressive élan."[16] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 70 out of 100, based on 41 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[17] On CinemaScore, audiences gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale.[15]

John Lasser of IGN gave the film an 8.6 out of 10 'great' score, saying, "The Walk is an amazing film, and is so on multiple levels. Joseph Gordon-Levitt puts forth such an easy charm crossed with a fierce determination that it is impossible not to fall in love with Philippe Petit as he attempts what sounds utterly suicidal. The planning and set up of the caper are as fun as any heist movie. And, even though everyone watching knows exactly what the film is building towards, the climactic sequence delivers everything you want and more."[18] Peter Debruge of Variety gave the film a positive review, saying "A filmmaker with a gift for overcoming the seemingly impossible puts audiences in the place of the man who walked between the Twin Towers in this gripping human-interest story."[19] David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review, saying "The film's payoff more than compensates for a lumbering setup, laden with cloying voiceover narration and strained whimsy."[20] Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune gave the film two and a half stars out of four, saying "The film gets better as it goes, and the last half-hour (especially in 3-D on an Imax screen) is nearly everything it should be: scary, visually momentous, meticulously realized."[21] Lou Lumenick of the New York Post gave the film three out of four stars, saying "Zemeckis finally delivers the goods in abundance in the section that really counts: A vertigo-inducing digital re-creation of Petit's famous walk back and forth between the towers."[22]

Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post gave the film two and a half stars out of four, saying "The Walk satisfies as an absorbing yarn of authority-flouting adventure and as an example of stomach-flipping you-are-there-ness. The journey it offers viewers doesn't just span 140 feet, but also an ethereal, now-vanished, world."[23] Peter Travers ofRolling Stone gave the film three out of four stars, saying "Expect the worst from the first half- that's before Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) strings up a wire between the World Trade Center towers. But then, oh, baby, does this movie fly."[24] Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three out of four stars, saying "The last 30 minutes or so are all about the walk. Dariusz Wolski's cinematography is beautiful... and Gordon-Levitt does some of his best acting when he's out on the wire and mostly silent, his face glowing from the sheer crazy joy he's feeling."[25] James Berardinelli of ReelViews gave the film three out of four stars, saying "It's two-thirds of a great film but the slow start and unremarkable first hour hold it back. Still, for those who buy into the precept that "good things are worth waiting for," The Walk unquestionably delivers."[26] Brian Truitt of USA Today gave the film two and a half stars out of four, saying "For those who want to feel like they're 110 stories up and living in the clouds, Hollywood does its job conjuring movie magic with a breathtaking Walk to remember."[27]

Infini is a 2015 Australian science fiction film directed by Shane Abbess, and starring Daniel MacPhersonGrace Huang, and Luke Hemsworth.[1]

Plot[edit]

In the early 23rd century, the Earth's highest paying jobs are on deep space mining colonies. On mining station O.I. Infini, an emergency is declared, and a search and rescue (SAR) team is sent in using a form of teleportation that allows instantaneous travel but causes severe time dilation. A team sent returns 30 seconds later in a berserk rage. Whit Carmichael, a new member of West Coast SAR, on his first day, teleports to Infini using a hacked teleporter after West Coast HQ activates a lethal lockdown to contain the crisis.

Less than a relative hour later, East Coast SAR is informed about the outbreak, and West Coast's destruction. They are given a primary task of disabling a weaponized payload and a secondary mission of recovering the one surviving member of the West Coast SAR, Whit Carmichael. Arriving, they find a slaughterhouse, eventually reuniting with Whit after he questions the team captain through an ASCII terminal. Whit explains that the mining staff slaughtered each other, tearing off their skin and killing one another. After a survivor attacks and exposes the rescue team, Whit searches the station for anything relating to the disease. Finding a lab, he discovers a log of the original research station, that documented the planet is actually entirely organic, and when thawed forms a primordial ooze, infecting and eventually mimicking and dominating any biological tissue. He further discovers that the ooze is aggressive and predatory in nature, driven by self-preservation.

Whit attempts to solicit help from the team, but they are suffering through stages of the infection and either attack Whit and each other or kill themselves. This leaves Whit the last surviving human on the station. He records a looped message to the ooze, believing it is alive and self-aware, criticizing it for focusing exclusively on humanity's violent base instincts, instead of working together, and telling it that it failed. He then commits suicide with a scalpel. The ooze hears his message and begins healing the wounds of the team. They awaken, with some question as to exactly how much each member remembers of the events. The captain states that they will extract in five minutes, and as they begin the teleportation process, Whit sees several humanoid forms that appear to be made of the ooze silently watching them go, one of them holding the picture of Whit's wife he carried with him, suggesting they may have evolved a sense of empathy.

Returned to Earth, the team is screened for biological contaminants before being released.
