Terminator Genisys is a 2015 American science fiction action film, directed by Alan Taylor and written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. The fifth installment in the Terminator franchise, the film starsArnold Schwarzenegger, reprising his role as the eponymous character, along with Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, and Jai Courtney. The film's plot follows soldier Kyle Reese (Courtney) in the war against Skynet, anartificial general intelligence seeking to destroy the human race. In a sequence of events similar to 1984's The Terminator, John Connor(Jason Clarke), leader of the Human Resistance, sends Reese back in time from 2029 to 1984 to protect Connor's mother, Sarah Connor(Emilia Clarke), who is being targeted by Skynet. However, once Reese arrives in the past he discovers the timeline has been altered, and Sarah has been raised by a reprogrammed Terminator, known as the Guardian (Schwarzenegger), since her childhood.

Megan Ellison and her production company Annapurna Picturesacquired the rights to the franchise in May 2011, and the following year the production of another installment in the series was set up in collaboration with Skydance Productions, owned by her brother David Ellison. The Ellisons made sure to ask for the input of Terminatorcreator James Cameron, hoping to create something that would get closer to the spirit of the original film and sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Principal photography occurred mostly in New Orleans, while also taking place in the on-screen setting of San Francisco. Six companies handled the film's visual effects, while the prosthetic make-up and animatronics were created by Legacy Effects, a studio founded by the alumni of Terminator veteran Stan Winston.

The film was released by Paramount Pictures on July 1, 2015, in standard digital format, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D. Terminator Genisyswas not well-received by critics, who found the story and performances unsatisfactory, though Schwarzenegger's return to the franchise was praised. It has grossed over $440 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of the franchise and Schwarzenegger's career after Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and is intended to be the first of a trilogy.

Plot[edit]

In 2029, Human Resistance leader John Connor (Jason Clarke) launches a massive final offensive against Skynet, anartificial general intelligence system seeking to eliminate the human race. Before the Resistance wins the offensive, Skynet activates a time machine and sends back a T-800 Terminator to 1984 to kill John's mother, Sarah Connor(Emilia Clarke). John's right-hand man, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney), volunteers to travel back in time to protect her. As Kyle floats in the machine's magnetic field, he witnesses John being attacked by another Resistance soldier (Matt Smith). He then has visions from his childhood about events in 2017.

Upon arrival in 1984, Skynet's T-800 is disabled by Sarah and the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a reprogrammed T-800 sent to protect her when she was nine years old. Kyle arrives a short time later and is immediately attacked by a T-1000 (Lee Byung-hun). Sarah and the Guardian join Kyle and destroy the T-1000 using acid. Sarah and the Guardian reveal they have constructed a makeshift time machine similar to Skynet's, and that Sarah plans to travel to 1997 – the year Skynet becomes self-aware. Realizing the timeline has been altered, Kyle is convinced that the future has changed due to the warning he received in his childhood vision. He persuades Sarah to travel to 2017 instead to stop Skynet.

In 2017, Kyle and Sarah materialize in the middle of a busy San Francisco highway and are apprehended by city police. While being treated for injuries, Sarah and Kyle learn that Skynet is called "Genisys", a soon-to-be-unveiled global operating system that is being embraced by the public. John Connor appears and rescues Sarah and Kyle, but the Guardian appears and immediately shoots John, revealing that John is an advanced T-3000 Terminator. While Kyle was being sent back through time, a T-5000 (Smith), the physical embodiment of Skynet disguised as a member of the Resistance, attacked John and transformed him into a Terminator. John was tasked with ensuringCyberdyne Systems' survival and traveled back in time to assist them with the development of Genisys.

Able to escape to a safe house, Sarah, Kyle, and the Guardian make final preparations to destroy Cyberdyne's Genisys mainframe. They head toward Cyberdyne's headquarters with the T-3000 in close pursuit. During an airborne chase, the Guardian divebombs into the T-3000's helicopter, causing it to crash. The T-3000 survives the crash and enters the Cyberdyne complex, where it advances the countdown from 13 hours to 15 minutes. Kyle, Sarah and the Guardian plant bombs at key points in the facility while holding off the T-3000.

In a final battle, the Guardian traps the T-3000 in the magnetic field of a prototype time machine. Both are destroyed, but just prior to the explosion, the T-3000 throws the remains of the Guardian into an experimental vat of mimetic polyalloy located nearby. Kyle and Sarah reach a bunker beneath the facility, and the explosion sets off the bombs, successfully preventing Genisys from coming online. The Guardian appears, upgraded with mimetic polyalloy components similar to that of the T-1000, and helps them find a way out of the debris.

The trio travels to Kyle's childhood home, where Kyle tells his younger self about Genisys and instructs him to repeat the warning in a mirror – critical insurance that the events lead to their arrival in 2017. Sarah, Kyle and the Guardian drive off into the country. A mid-credits scene reveals that the system core of Genisys was located in a protected subterranean chamber and has survived the explosion.

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger as Guardian/The Terminator, a reprogrammed T-800 (Model 101) Terminator sent back in time from an unknown origin to protect Sarah as a little girl. He becomes a father figure for Sarah, who calls him "Pops".[4][5]

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

While Terminator Salvation was intended to begin a new trilogy, production on a fifth film was put on hold because of legal issues with franchise owner The Halcyon Company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2009.[24][25][26] In an effort to avoid bankruptcy, Halcyon later decided to sell the rights to the franchise and claimed the property was valued at $70 million.[27][28] On February 8, 2010, the franchise auctioned for $29.5 million to Pacificor, a hedge fund company who was the largest creditor in Halcyon's bankruptcy proceedings.[29][30] The deal erased Halcyon's debts owed to Pacificor and guaranteed Halcyon $5 million for each additional Terminator sequel produced to pay off other outstanding debts.[29][31] Pacificor sold the franchise again in May 2010.[32]

In August 2010, Hannover House announced plans to develop a 3D animated film entitled Terminator 3000.[33]Pacificor responded with a cease and desist letter and declined a $20–30 million offer from Hannover for the rights to produce the film.[33] In February 2011, Universal Studios considered investing in a fifth Terminator film, with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to the title role, Fast Five director Justin Lin behind the helm, and Chris Morganas the screenwriter.[34] In late April 2011, a proposed Terminator package which dropped Morgan and added producer Robert W. Cort was circulated among Universal Studios, Sony, Lionsgate, and CBS Films.[35]

The package was eventually picked up by Megan Ellison and her production company Annapurna Pictures in May 2011, after they won an auction for the rights to make at least two more Terminator films, including Terminator 5.[36] The deal was finalized on December 4, 2012. The final price was reportedly less than the auction pledge, because new copyright laws had raised concerns that the rights would revert to James Cameron in 2019. Ellison's brother, David Ellison, and others from his Skydance Productions company signed on to co-produce the film.[37][38]Lin had to back away from the project because of his involvement in Fast & Furious 6.[39] Two screenwriters – Laeta Kalogridis of Shutter Island and Patrick Lussier of Drive Angry – were commissioned to write the screenplay in January 2013.[38] Kalogridis and Lussier initially turned down the project three times, but were convinced to write the screenplay by James Cameron.[40]

Paramount Pictures, which has a financing and distribution deal with Skydance, was confirmed as the distributor in June 2013, when they and the producers co-announced a release date of June 26, 2015.[41] Rian Johnson, Denis Villeneuve, and Ang Lee were each approached to take over the directing role from the departed Lin, but eventuallyThor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor was selected in September 2013.[42][43] In January 2014, Megan Ellison announced that her production company was no longer financing the film. Instead, Skydance and Paramount would provide funding, though Megan would retain credit as an executive producer.[44][45]

After she acquired the rights to the franchise, Megan Ellison asked James Cameron for input on the new film. Cameron later held several meetings with David Ellison, where they discussed Schwarzenegger's role and how to stay true to the original T-800 character.[46] On August 6, 2014, Schwarzenegger posted a picture to his Twitteraccount of himself sitting in a production chair on set. The picture revealed the correct spelling of the film's titleTerminator Genisys.[47]

Casting[edit]

On June 13, 2013, Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would return for his fourth film as the Terminator/T-800.[48] By early November 2013, Garrett Hedlund and Tom Hardy were under consideration for the role of Kyle Reese.[49] In November 2013, the choice for Sarah Connor was narrowed to Emilia Clarke, Tatiana Maslany, and Brie Larson,[50]and Clarke won the role in December.[51] The same month, Jason Clarke entered talks to play John Connor.[52] In February 2014, the studio considered Jai Courtney and Boyd Holbrook for Reese,[53] and later that month Courtney was confirmed for the role.[54] J. K. Simmons began talks for the role of Detective O'Brien in March.[12]Announcements in late March said that Dayo Okeniyi would play Danny Dyson,[55] and that Lee Byung-hun, Michael Gladis and Sandrine Holt joined the cast, Lee in a lead role.[56] Matt Smith joined the cast in May,[57] and Douglas Smith joined in June.[58]

Writing[edit]

Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier were invited to do the script while working on another project with David Ellison and Dana Goldberg. Both only accepted to do a Terminator film once James Cameron, a personal friend of Kalogridis who worked with her in Avatar, gave them his blessing. The starting point on the script was to retain Schwarzenegger as a central character, unlike the Star Trek reboot bringing Leonard Nimoy as an older Spock with a minor role. Thus they had to figure out how to write in the actor now being 67, and followed a suggestion of Cameron regarding the Terminator living tissue exterior being vulnerable to ageing, and their own idea of Skynet sending a Terminator after an infant Sarah Connor. Then they extended to featuring the core characters of Kyle, Sarah, and John Connor despite each being from a different time period. While the writers reported to have enjoyed Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, they opted to escape said film's suggestion that Judgment Day is inevitable due to a causal loop, instead considering that all Terminator timelines exist simultaneously in amultiverse. To properly map out the different timelines and help write the plot, Kalogridis and Lussier had fivewhiteboards "covering every wall in the office". Eventually they got to a central plot thread, where the Skynet of one universe, which had knowledge of being defeated in various timelines, sent the T-5000 to the Genisys timeline hoping to ultimately beat the humans by "having the best weapon that humans have", John Connor. The first draft of the screenplay, used to attract a director, was delivered on July 2013.[38][59][60]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography began on April 21, 2014 in New Orleans, and ended on August 6, 2014 in San Francisco.[61][62][63] Legacy Effects, successor to Stan Winston Studio, created the Terminator robotic and make-upeffects, led by John Rosengrant who had worked on the previous four Terminator films. However, Jeff Dawn, lead make-up artist on the first three installments, did not return.[64][65]

The production tried to match the cinematography of the first two Terminator films. Sequences set in the year 1984 favored blue, green and black tones to match the look of The Terminator, while scenes set during the future war against the machines were modeled after similar scenes in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.[66] Fictional Cyberdyne/Genisys headquarters were based on the headquarters of Oracle Corporation, which was founded by the Ellisons' father Larry Ellison.[67]

Visual effects[edit]

Visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs oversaw approximately 1,200 visual effects shots generated at Double Negative,Moving Picture Company (MPC), Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Lola VFX, One of Us, and Method Studios.[68][69]Double Negative was the leading company, with 900 shots that included the T-1000, T-5000, and T-3000 Terminators, the helicopter and bus chase sequences, and the Cyberdyne explosion. The complexity of the T-3000, which had to be constantly shown as a living mass of nanomites and had its transformation in successive layers instead of the T-1000's straight blend, at times would require. 20 hours to render.[clarification needed] The mechanical cells aimed to resemble the material on stealth aircraft, with a result described as "more matte than metal", resembling a slightly iridescent ceramic carbon. Given that the T-3000 was a man transformed into a robot, the design aimed for a human shape streamlined for better combat efficiency. The T-1000 was built out of fluid simulations, with the environments being filmed with high-resolution cameras to ensure proper reflection. Its acid destruction was realistically depicted following studies on acids burning metal and ingots of aluminum. Double Negative's artists shot many reference plates of San Francisco, including scans of the Golden Gate Bridge, to ensure the city was recreated properly in the bus and helicopter chases.[69][70]

MPC's most elaborate effect was the digital recreation of the original Terminator, which required 12 months for 35 shots which were completed just 30 minutes before the final print was submitted to the studio. Performance capture was only used for facial animation, as Schwarzenegger was scanned reading his lines. The studio's artists studied various archive footage of Schwarzenegger, focusing mostly on The Terminator and Pumping Iron, and were given a plaster cast of him made in 1984. On-set, the fight between both Terminators at a time had Schwarzenegger and Brett Azar, a bodybuilder chosen for his physical similarity to the actor in 1984, and on more dangerous scenes Azar and a stunt double, requiring effects artists to replace the face of the Guardian as well.[71][72] MPC also handled the future battle, adding set extensions, and Skynet robots and vehicles, based on the practical models made by Legacy Effects. Industrial Light & Magic did both the opening scene where San Francisco is wiped out during Judgement Day, which drew inspiration from the Los Angeles nuclear destruction of Terminator 2, and the Terminator vision.[69]

For the IMAX 3D release, the film was remastered using IMAX DMR technology to create the 3D effects and high resolution film print.[73]

Music[edit]

Lorne Balfe composed the movie's score.[74] Balfe aimed to create a soundtrack that stood in its own given the film's status as "not a prequel and not a sequel", while also employing the iconic theme written by Brad Fiedel forThe Terminator, "have a nod to the past but also bring it into the future."[75] Chinese pop singer Jane Zhang andhip hop artist Big Sean contributed the single "Fighting Shadows", released by Def Jam Recordings on June 30, 2015, as a bonus track on the film's soundtrack.[76][77] The bonus track is Zhang's first recording for English-language listeners and Big Sean’s musical debut for a feature film.[78] A music video of the single produced and directed by Robby Starbuck featured footage from the film.[79]

The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated", OneRepublic's "Love Runs Out" and Inner Circle's "Bad Boys" are all played in the film but are not included on its soundtrack.[80]

Release[edit]

The premiere for Terminator Genisys was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on June 28, 2015.[81] The film was released in ten markets on June 25, and the following week debuted in 35 countries, including the United States,[82] in regular, RealD 3Dand IMAX 3D formats.[83] As of July 26, the film was playing in 64 countries outside of North America.[84] The film was released in China on August 23, 2015.[85]

Marketing[edit]

On December 2, 2014, Paramount released the first motion poster for the film, showing a T-800 disintegrating into dust before the logo appears. A trailer preview was released the following day, showing brief clips of the film accompanied by Ten Years After's song "I'd Love to Change the World", covered by Jetta. A break from pastTerminator releases, the preview featured somewhat forced-looking camera motion in aerial effect sequences and a first look at the color-grading used to invoke the look of past films. The full trailer debuted on December 4.[86] The second trailer, released In April 2015, was noted for spoiling the plot twist where John Connor becomes a Terminator,[87] a decision criticized by Alan Taylor and the writers, who intended to keep this a secret.[38][88]

WWE's WrestleMania 31 event on March 29, 2015 promoted the film with an elaborate entrance stage for Triple Hin his match against Sting. The stage featured Triple H donning a Terminator-style outfit and a video of Schwarzenegger telling fans that "Judgment Day is here. It's time to play the game."[89]

On June 14, 2015, Schwarzenegger visited the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for an advanced screening ofTerminator Genisys.[90] On June 16, 2015, the mobile navigation app Waze added the voice of Schwarzenegger, in the role of a Terminator, as an option for the voice navigation.[91] On June 19, 2015, Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke were featured on The Graham Norton Show to promote the movie.[92] That same day, Schwarzenegger released a video of himself walking around Hollywood dressed as the Terminator, including posing as a wax model at Madame Tussauds Hollywood. The video promoted a fundraising contest in support of charity After-School All-Stars, which would bring selected donors to the Terminator Genisys premiere.[93]

Several YouTube personalities starred alongside Schwarzenegger in a YouTube miniseries produced by Heresy and released on June 22, 2015, entitled Terminator Genisys: The YouTube Chronicles.[94] Consisting of videos uploaded by Machinima, Toby Turner, and Lilly Singh, the series also featured Olga Kay, Sean Klitzner, Lloyd Ahlquist, andMatthew Santoro, among others.[95]

On June 24, Schwarzenegger spoke to the visitors of an early fan screening of the movie in New York City that had been announced on Reddit, which was followed by an interview and selfie-session.[96]

Home media[edit]

The film was released on digital download on October 20, 2015 and was released by Paramount Home Entertainment on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on November 10, 2015.[97]

Reception[edit]

Box office[edit]

As of September 17, 2015, Terminator Genisys has grossed $89.7 million in North America and $350.4 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $440.2 million.[3] Only Terminator 2: Judgement Day earned more at the box office in the Terminator franchise.[98][99] Given its $155 million production budget and the $50–100 million analysts estimate was spent on marketing, Bloomberg Business estimated that the film would have needed to earn at least $450 million during its theatrical run to break even.[100] In August 2015, Forbes highlighted Terminator Genisys as the first American film to earn $400 million worldwide without also crossing $100 million in North America, a distinction only shared with French film The Intouchables.[101]

United States and Canada[edit]

In the United States and Canada, Terminator Genisys opened on July 1, 2015, the same day as drama-comedyMagic Mike XXL, across 3,700 theaters, and was previewed in Tuesday night showings on June 30, 2015, across 2,527 theaters. The films, along with holdovers Jurassic World and Inside Out, were each projected to earn approximately $45–55 million over the Independence Day weekend and approximately $27–30 million over the three day weekend.[102]

Box office analysts noted that Terminator Genisys would have to compete with Jurassic World, and to some extentTed 2, for male moviegoers. They expected the film to have the upper hand with its replacement of Jurassic Worldin IMAX theaters, but it was expected to have to earn a large haul overseas to make up any deficits.[2] It made $2.3 million from Tuesday night preview showings – the highest for Paramount Pictures, breaking the $2.1 million record set by Hercules (2014) – and $8.9 million on its opening day (Wednesday).[103][104][105] It went on to finish with $42.4 million over the 5-day opening stretch, including a weekend haul of $27 million from 3,758 theaters, placing it in third place at the box office behind Jurassic World and Inside Out.[106] Scott Mendelson of Forbes suggested several possible reasons for the poor box office performance: bad marketing, negative reviews, competition from the family-friendly Jurassic World and Inside Out, the decline of Schwarzenegger's star power and the fact that Americans have become apathetic to another Terminator movie.[107]

Other markets[edit]

As of the weekend ending August 2, 2015 it was playing across 65 countries including the U.S. and Canada with China being released on August 23, 2015.[108] For the film's overseas box office performances, comparisons were made with Paramount's own Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), along with Pacific Rim, Lucy, and World War Z, instead of its predecessor Terminator Salvation (2009) and other previous Terminator films.[109][110][111] The film was released in ten countries ahead of its North American debut starting from June 25, 2015, earning $8.4 million in its opening weekend.[112] In its second weekend, the film expanded to 46 countries — adding 36 new countries — earning $73.3 million, debuting at first place at the international box office for one weekend[113] before being overtaken by Minions the following weekend.[111] It eventually topped the box office outside of North America for four non-consecutive weekends.[114][115]

It had the biggest opening in the franchise and the best for Schwarzenegger in Singapore ($1.4 million) and Colombia ($1.3 million), both of which were above the opening of Terminator Salvation and in 28 other countries, including Russia, Korea and Mexico,[113] Likewise, the film also went number one in Peru, Vietnam, Turkey and in 28 other countries.[112][113] the biggest for Paramount in Argentina ($2.3 million),[111] the biggest July opening and the fifth biggest of all time in Russia and the CIS with $12.5 million.[113] In the UK and Brazil, it opened at number two earning $5.8 million and $3.9 million respectively, both behind Minions, also in France with $3.8 million behind Les Profs 2.[113] Other notable openings were in South Korea ($11.2 million), Mexico ($6.1 million), Japan ($5.4 million), Australia ($4.4 million), Germany ($3.1 million) and India ($3 million).[111][113] As of July 26, 2015, its largest markets outside of the U.S. and Canada are South Korea ($23.5 million), Russia ($21.8 million), Japan ($16.6 million) the U.K. ($16.1 million) and Brazil ($11.1 million).[84] In China, it earned $2.2 million in midnight showings which is the fourth biggest of all time and $27.4 million on its opening day (August 23, 2015), which is the fourth biggest opening day of all time for a Hollywood movie in the market behind Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Transformers: Age of Extinction. It eventually topped the international box office just by a day gross from China.[116] It went on to earn $82.8 million through its 8-days opening week (Sunday to Sunday), $58 million (Monday to Sunday), and $23.4 million through its 3-days opening weekend (Friday to Sunday).[114][117] Rob Cain of Forbes attributed its successful opening in China due to Schwarzenegger's popularity there, the audience's appeal for movies featuring robots, disasters and machines, and for being the first Hollywood movie to be released after the nearly 60 days blackout period in which non-Chinese movies were barred from going to general release in the country.[118] As of September 12, 2015, it has grossed approximately $112.8 million in China.[119][120]

Critical response[edit]

The Los Angeles Times said critics found Terminator Genisys to be a "messy sequel" that was a "convoluted retread" of past films.[121] According to TheWrap, critics found the time travel storyline to be "convoluted" and that the performances were "unremarkable" aside from Schwarzenegger reprising his role.[122] The film review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes surveyed 217 critics and, categorizing the reviews as positive or negative, assessed 56 as positive and 161 as negative. Of the 217 reviews, it determined an average rating of 4.7 out of 10. It gave the film a score of 25% and summarized the critical consensus, "Mired in its muddled mythology, Terminator: Genisys is a lurching retread that lacks the thematic depth, conceptual intelligence, or visual thrills that launched this once-mighty franchise."[123] The similar website Metacritic surveyed 41 critics and assessed 24 reviews as mixed, 12 as negative, and 5 as positive. It gave the film a weighted average score of 38 out of 100, indicated by the website as "generally unfavorable reviews".[124] In CinemaScore polls, cinema audiences gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale.[125]

Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal gave the film a negative review, saying it "plays like the worst of all outcomes."[126] Similarly, James Rocchi of The Wrap compared it negatively to The Terminator, saying that Genisys"comes back from the past to water down a whole season of summer moviegoing."[127] Michael Phillips of theChicago Tribune criticized the unoriginality of the film, stating that it is "simply business and dull business at that."[128]

After having watched a prerelease screening of the film, James Cameron voiced his support for Terminator Genisys, characterizing it as being respectful of the first two films, and saying he felt like "the franchise has been reinvigorated".[129] Michael O'Sullivan of The Washington Post reviewed the film favorably, stating that "Genisysgoes back to what made the franchise work in the first place: not the machine inside the man, but vice versa".[130]Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair also gave the film a positive review, stating that it "makes a surprisingly compelling case" for itself.[131] Mark Hughes of Forbes went further, calling many of the negative reviews a result of "cynical nostalgia" that "distrusts change and anticipates failure", and branding the low ratings at aggregate websites as "ridiculously and undeservedly low".[132]

Planned sequels and spin-off TV series[edit]

In December 2013, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a spin-off TV series was in the works that would tie directly into the new Terminator trilogy.[133][134] On September 5, 2014, Paramount announced that Terminator Genisys would be the first film in a new stand-alone trilogy, with two sequels scheduled for release on May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018.[135][136] On February 24, 2015, Schwarzenegger confirmed that he will return for the first sequel.[137] While promoting the film in Berlin in June 2015, Skydance CEO David Ellison and COO Dana Goldberg said that the spin-off TV series was still in development.[138] On July 26, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Paramount and Skydance declined to comment about the status of the announced sequel and TV series, though they confirmed that international box office performance will be taken into consideration.[139] On September 22, 2015 Deadline wrote that sources told them that the movie failed to clear the needed $150 million in China in order to fast track a sequel.[140] On October 1, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that sources have informed them that the sequel movies and TV spin-off have been put on indefinite hold since the movie has failed to break even.[141] Talking about the future of the franchise, Goldberg said on October 6, 2015 that she "wouldn’t say [it's] on hold, so much as re-adjusting". She stated that despite the disappointing performance of Genisysdomestically, the company is happy with its worldwide numbers and still intends to make new movies and the TV series. She indicated production on a sequel cannot start as early as the beginning of 2016 because they are going to spend time researching and talking to audiences how to improve upon the direction they were going to go in the future after Genisys.[142]

터미네이터 시리즈 제작 순서상 5편에 해당하는 영화이다. 스토리는 시리즈를 리부트시켜서 4편과 이어지는 스토리가 아니라 1편의 이전 상황에서 새로 시작하는 것이다. 연출 역시 1, 2편과 비슷한 장면으로 구성해서 전편들과 비교해보는 재미도 있다. 참조

감독은 《왕좌의 게임》과 《토르: 다크 월드》를 연출했던 앨런 테일러가 맡았다.

2. 시놉시스[편집]

인간 저항군의 리더 존 코너의 탄생을 막기 위해 스카이넷은 터미네이터를 과거로 보내고, 이를 저지하기 위해 부하 카일 리스가 뒤를 따른다.
어린 사라 코너와 그녀를 보호하고 있던 T-800은 로봇과의 전쟁을 준비하며 이미 그들을 기다리고 있었다. 시간의 균열로 존 코너 역시 과거로 오지만 그는 나노 터미네이터 T-3000으로 변해있었던 것.. 이제 인류는 인간도 기계도 아닌 그 이상의 초월적인 존재, 사상 최강의 적에 맞서 전쟁을 벌여야만 한다!
마침내, 인류의 운명이 결정된다!

3. 개봉 전 정보들[편집]

3.1. 1편의 시점 전에 역사가 바뀐 소프트 리부트[편집]

터미네이터 시리즈는 일종의 평행우주 이론을 접목한 영화로서, 본래 2편이 당시 감독이었던 제임스 캐머런의 시나리오상 완결편에 가까운 것이었다. 엔딩도 추후 공개된 스카이넷 에디션에 따르면 심판의 날은 일어나지 않았다는 사라 코너의 독백이 나오는 평화로운 해피엔딩으로 마무리되는 게 정석이었다. 그러나 2편의 초대박 흥행으로 인해 후속작을 염두에 두고돈벌이에 고무된 제작사 측의 압력도 있었겠지만 극장판 엔딩에서 여운을 남겨놓았다. 캐머런 역시 이런 해피엔딩이 전형적인 권선징악의 틀에 박힌 마무리이고, 영화의 어두운 분위기를 확 깨는 뜬금없는 해피엔딩이라서 내부 시사회를 거쳐 엔딩을 변경했다고 한다. 

후속편으로 나온 3편과 4편 모두 줄거리는 3편에서 운명론적 내용과 미래전쟁으로 후속편 내용을 유도하는 결말이 기존 팬들에겐 반발을 샀지만 액션영화로선 볼만한작품이란 호의적인 평가들도 받았으나, 이것을 정리하려는 4편은 스핀오프 분위기와 결말 유출 후 급한 내용 수정 등의 한계로 전반적으로 평론가들이나 팬들에게 모두 까이는 지경의 작품이 됐다. 1편은 워낙 저예산 영화라서 그렇다 치더라도, 2편은 현재 기준으로 보더라도 상당히 세련된 특수효과와 시각효과를 사용했으며 당시 T-1000이 보여준 액체인간 CG는 지금 봐도 어색하지 않을 정도의 퀄리티를 보여준다.본격 시간을 달리는 캐머런 퀄리티 제임스 캐머런은 1,2편까지 감독, 각본을 맡았지만, 3, 4편은 맡지 않았다. 그건 5편도 마찬가지...립서비스용으로 르네상스라는 말을 한 캐머런?] 3편과 4편은 줄거리에 대한 비판도 있으나 시각적으로는 훨씬 나았다. 앞선 작품들이 이런저런 사정이 있었으므로 이번 작품은 아예 프랜차이즈의 이름만 살려놓고 내용물을 뒤엎어서 새로운 스토리로 재도약하겠다는 의도가 깔린 듯하다.

4.1. 등장인물[편집]

  • 한국 출신 배우 이병헌이 T-1000으로 등장한다. 흥미롭게도 과거 이병헌이 출연했던 휴대전화 광고에서 컬트적인 인기를 끌었던 단언컨대, 메탈은 가장 완벽한 물질입니다 멘트를 제작진이 알고 있었는지는 몰라도, 배역이 과거 CF에서 이병헌의 이미지와 묘하게 잘 어울린다는 평가를 얻고 있다. 그렇게 완벽한 물질이라고 찬양하더니 이제는 정말로 메탈 인간이 돼버렸다나... 그 외 예고편에 나오듯 자신의 팔을 자기가 잘라서 창으로 만들어 던지는 새로운 기술을 시전하는 것으로 보아 제작진들의 센스가 3, 4편보단 나은 것 같아서 T-X처럼 흑역사는 되지 않을 것 같다는 반응. T-1000은 이 영화에서도 2편에서처럼 경찰복을 입고 나온다. 헤어스타일이 1편의 눈썹 있는 T-800, 2편 T-1000을 섞은 것 같다는 의견도 있다. 다만 감독이 예고편에서 너무 많은 것을 보여줬다는 말을 증명하듯이 예고편 분량을 벗어나지 못하고 초반에 제거된다.
  • 시리즈의 터줏대감인 전직 주지사도 오랜만에 시리즈에 복귀했다. 비록 4편에서는 CG로 구현된 모습이 잠깐 등장했을 뿐으로 많은 팬을 아쉽게 했지만 본작에선 비중 있는 역할에 몸을 사리지 않는 전형적인 액션 히어로의 모습으로 복귀한다.
  • 사라 코너 역시 등장한다. 린다 해밀턴이 구축했던 강렬한 여전사의 이미지가 워낙에 강하게 각인되어 있어서인지, 본작에서 배역을 맡은 용엄마에밀리아 클라크의 이미지가 다소 연약해 보인다는 의견도 있었...으나 개봉 후에는 쑥 들어갔다. 린다 해밀턴을 75% 정도로 압축시켜 놓은 것마냥(...) 닮았다.[1] 25%는 기대하지 말자 성장환경이 다른 게 원인이다. 어릴 때 부모님을 잃고 큰 충격을 받아서 키가 덜 컸다 카더라
  • 존 코너 역할은 제이슨 클라크가 담당한다. 최근 할리우드 영화의 대세 배우임을 증명이라도 하듯 본작에서 메인 악역을 맡게 되었다.
  • 존 코너와 사라 코너는 혈연관계니 당연히 성이 같은데, 우연하게도 각각의 배역을 연기하는 제이슨 클라크와 에밀리아 클라크 또한 성이 '클라크(Clarke)'로 철자까지 똑같다.
  • 무슨 이유인지 HBO의 드라마 《OZ》에 등장했던 인물이 셋이나 나온다. 네오나치의 두목 슐린저 역이었던 J.K. 시몬스(물론 《위플래쉬》에서 인상적인 모습으로 이쪽이 친숙한 사람들도 많지만)가 오브라이언 형사 역으로 등장하고 교도소장 역이었던 어니 허드슨,라틴 갱단이었던 오토 산체스가 형사로 등장한다.

4.3. 타임라인[편집]

리부트 작품이니 만큼 기존 작품들에서 타임라인이 새롭게 분기한 세계이다.
아스트랄한 나선라인이다 지금 내가 보는게 터미네이터인가 닥터후인가 닥터가 악당이라서 그런가 자세한건 터미네이터 시리즈 항목 참고.

4.3.1. 넥서스 포인트[편집]

역사상 타임 라인에 직접적인 영향을 주는 사건을 지칭하는 말. 가변역사와 불가변역사과도 어느정도 연관성을 보인다.

극중에서는 터미네이터화 된 존 코너가 과거로 터미네이터들을 보내거나 자신이 과거로 갈 수 있기 때문에 생긴다. 과거의 사건을 바꿀 수 있기 때문. 따라서 넥서스 포인트가 생기면 그 뒤의 역사도 통째로 바뀐다. 그런데 터미네이터 세계관에선 미래->과거 시간여행이 가능해서 결과적으로 미래에 무슨 일이 생겼는데 그게 시간여행을 통해 과거에도 영향을 미치면서 다시 그걸로 과거가 바뀌고... 이런식으로 연쇄반응이 일어날 수 있다. 스카이넷도 존 코너도 자신들의 존재를 유지하기 위해선 계속 이 시간전쟁(...)을 그만두고 싶어도 그만둘수 없다는 점에선 동변상련(....)[2]

작중 가장 컸던 넥서스 포인트는 바로 카일 리스가 시간 이동을 한 직후 존 코너가 T-5000에게 습격당한 것으로 이게 원인으로[3] 기존 터미네이터 1~4까지 이어지는 타임라인이 죄다 리부트 되고 처음부터 다시 시작하게 되었다. 또한 이때 시간을 거슬러올라가던 카일은 이 넥서스 포인트로 개찬된 자신의 생애를 마치 경험한 것처럼 인식하게 된다.

4.5. 오마쥬 요소[편집]

4.5.1. 시리즈 공통[편집]

  • T-1000의 습격으로 위기에 몰린 카일을 구한 직후 사라가 시리즈 단골 대사 중 하나인 "살고 싶으면 따라와요(Come with me if you want to live)!"를 외친다.
  • 팝스가 T-3000이 탄 헬기를 추락시키기 위해 뛰어내리기 직전 불후의 명대사 "돌아오겠다(I'll be back)."를 날린다.
  • 시리즈 공통으로 오프닝과 엔딩에서 나오는 내레이션은 카일 리스가 맡았으며, 시리즈 전체를 관통하는 메시지인 '미래와 운명은 정해진 것이 아니다, 바꾸어 갈 수 있다' 역시 카일 리스가 내레이션으로 말한다. 메시지의 경우 초반 존 코너가 어머니께 전해달라며 말하기도 한다.[4]

4.5.2. 1편[편집]

  • 사라의 회상장면에서 나오는 팝스의 예전 모습은 1편부터 사람들이 기억하던 80년대 터미네이터의 모습 그대로이다.
  • 카일이 간직하고 있는 사라 코너의 사진은 바뀐 배우를 따라 에밀리아 클라크의 모습으로 교체되었다. 복장은 1편 엔딩에서 린다 해밀턴이 입었던 그대로이며 1편과 달리 불타지 않는다.
  • 초반 알몸T-800이 1984년으로 왔을 때의 장면이 1편 당시와 거의 완벽할 정도로 똑같이 묘사되었다. 도착 좌표에 있었던 쓰레기차로 작업 중이던 엑스트라 운전사가 시동이 꺼지자 "왜 이래?"라며 난감해하다가 허공에서 스파크가 마구 튀기자 도망가버리는 장면, 도착 직후 주변을 쓱 훑어보다 도시를 내려다보는 장면, 망원경을 가지고 투닥거리며 낄낄대는 양아치들에게 다가가 "산책하기 좋은 밤이군.", "깨끗한 옷이 없다."등 완전히 같은 대사를 하며 옷을 빼앗으려는 장면의 전개 등 1편의 장면이 대거 재현됐다.[5] (비교 동영상이 있다.[6] ) 1편의 원조 양아치들이 훨씬 불량해 보이는 게 가장 큰 차이점.
  • 카일이 과거로 왔을 때의 장면이 역시 거의 완벽히 동일한 모습을 보여주었다. 좌표 설정 탓에 허공에서 떨어지고 시간 이동의 영향으로 직후 매우 고통스러워 하며 우연히 그 자리에 있었던 주정뱅이 노숙자가 "방금 밝은 빛 못 봤수?"라는 대사를 날리는 것(다만 1편에선 만취 상태였는데 여기선 토끼눈을 뜨며 놀라워한다바지 속에 내복을 안 입고 있기도 하고), 그 노숙자의 바지를 빼앗아 입은 직후 지나가던 경찰에 발각되어 도망쳐 옷 가게 안으로 숨는 전개 등등. 다만 여기선 쫓아오는 경찰의 정체가 전혀 달랐다.
  • 카일이 매장 안에 숨어 도망다니는 와중에 코트를 가져가고 신발에 발을 대본다든가, 커튼이 쳐진 칸막이에서 나이키 신발에 찍찍이를 붙이는 장면, 계단에서 뛰어내려 1층으로 내려가는 장면까지 1편의 모습을 최대한 비슷하게 묘사. T-1000이 경찰의 모습으로 등장하고 숨어있다가 튀어나와 경찰을 살해한 것도 2편을 연상시킨다. 다만 상황이 전혀 다른지라 훨씬 급박한 분위기가 난다.
  • 카일이 뜯어진 전선을 다시 가동된 T-800의 배 부분에 꽂아넣는 장면은 1편에서 사제 다이너마이트를 배 부분에 집어넣는 장면과 같고 유탄을 먹여 생체외피가 싸그리 날아가고 기계 골격만 남는 것은 4편 후반부 T-800과 존 코너의 전투 장면을 따왔다. 또한 T-800을 마무리하는 순간 카일의 얼굴 옆으로 주먹이 박히는 장면은 1편 마지막 압축기에 찌그러져 정지된 T-800의 손이 사라의 얼굴 바로 옆에서 멈춘 장면과 매우 비슷하다.
  • T-3000이 자기는 타협되지도 않고 설득되지도 않고 동정심이나 후회나 두려움도 느끼지 않는다고 한 말[7]은 카일이 사라에게 터미네이터를 설명하면서 한 말[8]과 같다.

4.5.3. 2편[편집]

  • 스카이넷이 타임머신에 들어갈 T-800을 꺼내는 장면은 2편의 홍보용으로 쓰인 장면의 오마주.
  • 2편 초반에 인류 저항군과 스카이넷 군단의 전투 장면에서 차량이 전복되는 장면 등도 오마주되었다. 다만 2편의 차량이 레이저 기관총을 단 테크니컬에 가까운 수준이었다면 이번엔 더 세련된 디자인으로 바뀌었다.
  • T-800을 쓰러뜨린 후 팝스가 총탄이 날아온 쪽을 보며 엄지손가락따봉을 드는 것은 2편 마지막에 나온 전설적인 그 명장면에서 따온 것이다.
  • T-1000과 추격전을 벌이는 장면은 2편에서 사라를 구출하여 병원에서 탈출하는 장면의 오마주. 이때 사라는 2편 마지막에 사용했던 레밍턴 870을 사용하고 카일은 2편의 추격전에서 사라가 사용했던 AR-15 계열 소총을 쓴다. 마지막에 T-1000이 나가떨어질 때 총격에 잘린 액체금속 일부가 차에 남아있는 것과 T-1000이 그것을 회수하는 장면도 동일. 차이점이라면 액체금속 파편이 차의 부품처럼 변형되어 주인공 일행이 금방 알아채지 못해 T-1000에게 계속 위치를 추적당했고 팝스가 나중에야 눈치를 채고 총으로 날려버린다. 이 파편을 2편에서는 T-1000이 걸어와 발로 흡수했지만, 이번에는 경찰차 운전 도중에 문을 열고 손으로 흡수하는 것도 차이점.
  • 역시 추격 장면에서 T-1000이 경찰차 앞유리를 박치기로깨부수고 액체 형태로 나오는 장면은 2편에서 헬기의 유리를 깨고 들어가는 장면과 똑같다. 마찬가지로 경찰차 밑에서 다시 액체 형태로 흘러나오는 부분도 2편에서 얼어붙었다 깨진 이후에 다시 뭉치는 모습의 오마주이다.
  • 동력부가 박살이 나 정지된 T-800이 T-1000이 흘려 넣은 액체금속으로 깨어날 때 나오는 대체 동력 가동은 2편에서 정지되었던 T-800이 대체 동력원을 찾아 재부팅하는 장면과 똑같다.
  • 사라 코너가 오른쪽 어깨 뒤에 칼자국처럼 길게 상처를 입는 장면은 2편에서 T-1000이 정신병원 엘리베이터 위에서 칼날로 공격해 다치는 장면을 오마주.
  • 카일과 카일로 변장한 T-1000이 동시에 등장해 사라를 혼란스럽게 하는데 이는 2편 후반부 도망친 존을 T-1000이 사라로 변하여 유인하고 직후 진짜 사라가 등장하는 장면과 똑같다. 이때 T-1000이 하는 대사도 동일. 다만 여기선 나중에 나타난, 사라 기준으로 왼쪽의 카일이 진짜였고, 그걸 가려낼 때도 그냥 한 명의 발을 총으로 쏴버리는(...) 무식하면서도 효과 만점인 방법을 사용했다.[9] 사실 관객들은 2편에서의 '사라 코너는 나약하지 않다'는 어려운 복선을 떠올리지 않더라도 누가 진짜인지 알 수 있는데, 먼저 나타난 카일 리스로 변장한 T-1000은 자신이 다쳤다고 했지만, 진짜 카일 리스는 앞서 T-800과의 전투에서 다치지 않았기 때문. 카일:어떻게 나인 걸 알았어? / 사라:그냥 대충 알 것 같더라구. / 카일:대충??
  • 팝스가 수시로 짓는 어색하고 오버스러운 미소는 2편에서 존이 웃어보라고 했을 때 입 모양을 분석하여 어설프게 따라하는 장면의 오마주. 다만 2편에선 그 후에 자연스럽게 웃는 모습이 몇 번 나오지만 제니시스에선 작중 내내 저런 표정으로 웃는다(...).카일:그거 진짜 소름끼치는거 알아?
  • 1997년이 아니라 2017년으로 가야 한다며 카일이 T-800의 CPU 칩을 빼내어 사라를 설득할 때 2편에서도 나온 명대사 중 하나인 "날 믿어(Trust me)."를 나지막이 말한다.
  • 팝스가 숨겨온 산탄총을 꺼내는 장면은 2편에서 존 코너가 T-800과 처음 만났을 때의 오마주. 2편에선 장미꽃 상자였지만 이번엔 곰인형으로 바뀌었다.
  • 병원 옥상에서 헬기가 이륙할 시간을 벌기 위해 T-3000이 날리는 총탄을 팝스가 몸으로 막는 장면은 2편에서 T-800이 존 코너를 총격으로부터 지키는 장면들과 유사하다.자동사격으로 땡기지 않고 권총처럼 한 발 한 발 정성스럽게 쏘는 것도 헬기를 타고 추격전을 벌이는 것 역시 2편에서 T-1000이 헬기를 타고 쫓아가는 장면과 흡사하다.
  • 사이버다인사에 잠입하여 폭탄을 설치하던 사라를 붙잡은 T-3000이 그녀의 어깻죽지를 꿰뚫는 장면은 2편 후반부 존을 도망치게 하고 혼자 T-1000과 맞서던 사라가 어깨를 관통당하는 장면과 유사하다. 집게손가락만 변형시킨 것과 그녀를 붙잡은 채로 협박하는 것도 매우 비슷하다.
  • 미완성 타임머신 앞에 벌어지는 마지막 전투는 초반 부분처럼 오마주의 향연을 보여주는데, 난간에 처박힌 T-3000이 몸을 돌리지 않고 분자 구조 변형으로 앞모습과 뒷모습을 순식간에 뒤바꾸어 반격하는 장면은 2편 마지막 전투에서 T-1000이 보여준 장면과 똑같으며 이는 초반 이병헌표 T-1000 역시 보여준 묘기이다.
  • 전투 중 팝스의 왼쪽 팔이 뜯겨나가는 부분은 2편 후반부 공장 전투 장면에서 T-1000이 T-800의 왼팔을 톱니바퀴에 끼워 스스로 뜯어내도록 한 것과 유사한 전개이며 1편 마지막에 압축기에 짜부라진 T-800의 유일하게 멀쩡한 부분으로 2편에서 사이버다인사에 보관되어있는 것을 떠오르게 한다. 이 뜯어진 팔은 카일 리스가 주워 T-3000에게 마구 휘두르는 무기로 사용하는데 시리즈 공통으로 액션 장면에서 빠지지 않고 등장하는 '기다란 무기로 얼굴을 후려치는' 장면이기도 하다. 또한, 팔이 뜯기고 수세에 몰린 팝스가 떨어뜨린 자기장 글러브를 향해 기어가는 장면은 2편에서 떨어뜨린 유탄 발사기를 향해 기어가는 장면과 유사하다.
  • 팝스가 T-3000과 동귀어진을 하려고 양자막 생성기에 뛰어들며 하는 "얼마나 더 버틸 수 있을지 모르겠다"는 2편에서 마일스 다이슨이 죽기 직전 했던 말이다.
  • 사라가 T-3000에게 샷건을 쏘며 몰아붙이는 장면은 용광로를 앞에 두고 샷것으로 T-1000을 몰아붙이는 장면과 유사하다.

4.5.4. 3편[편집]

  • MRI로 T-3000을 잠시 묶어두는 장면은 3편에서 존 코너가 입자 가속기를 가동해 T-X를 붙잡아둔 장면의 오마쥬. 다른 타임라인이기는 했지만 전작에서 적에게 썼던 방법을 이번엔 자신이 그대로 당했다는게 참 묘한 부분이다.[10]
  • 스쿨버스 추격씬에서 팝스가 버스에서 튕겨져 나와 다른 차에 머리를 처박힌 것은 3편 초중반 추격전에서 소방차에 처박히는 장면과 비슷하다. 이후 시리즈 개근 대사인 "내려(Get out)."를 시전한다.
  • 팝스가 수시로 "(I am) Old, but not obsolete" (오래되긴 했지만 쓸모없지는 않아)이라고 하는데 이 대사로 3편의 T-850이 자기 배에서 배터리를 빼면서 "..이기기 힘들다. 나는 구식이지만 T-X는 신형이다."라고 하는 대사를 완벽히 엿먹인다.
  • 짝짓기 타령 또한 3편에서 나왔던 대사이다. T850 : 나에게 인간의 짝짓기에 관한 추가 정보는 없다.

4.5.5. 4편[편집]

  • T-3000의 설정은 '급진적인 사고의 전환이 필요'하여 인간의 장기와 기억을 가진 터미네이터 마커스 라이트의 오마쥬 성격이 짙다. 둘 다 인간이었던 터미네이터이고, 스카이넷의 새로운 방식의 필요에 의해 만들어졌다는 점이다. 동시에 둘은 대칭을 이루고 있는데, 마커스는 스카이넷의 명령을 자신도 모르게 따르다가 진실을 알고는 스스로의 선택으로 인간으로 남고 스카이넷에 반항한 터미네이터라면, 존 코너는 자신이 인간이었음을 알면서도 (자의든 타의든) 스카이넷의 충복이 되어 터미네이터, 기계로 남았다는 점이다. 결국 둘의 최후는 극명하게 갈리는데, 마커스는 동료들이 지켜보는 가운데 임종을 맞는 인간적인 최후였지만, 존 코너는 그렇게 설득하려던 부모에게 버림받고 기계로서 최후를 맞았다.
  • 카일 리스가 팝스에게 자신도 모르는 프로그램이 있을 지도 모른다고 사라 코너에게 말한다. 마커스 라이트를 떠올리게 하는데 카일 리스는터미네이터 4의 일을 겪은 것일 수도...

4.5.6. 사라 코너 연대기[편집]

  • 초반에 사라 코너가 T-1000을 차로 밀어버리고 조수석 문을 연 뒤 카일 리스에게 "Come with me if you wanna live!"를 외치는 장면은 터미네이터: 사라 코너 연대기에서 캐머런 필립스가 T-888을 차로 밀어버리고 존 코너에게 저 대사를 외치는 장면의 오마주. 캐머런은 터미네이터 프랜차이즈에서 저 대사를 한 최초의 여성이기도 하다.
  • 사라와 카일이 타임머신을 타고 고속도로에 떨어진 것도 터미네이터: 사라 코너 연대기의 오마주.
  • T-3000이 된 존 코너가 사이버다인사의 중역이 된 것 역시 터미네이터: 사라 코너 연대기에서 중역진으로 나온 T-1001을 연상케 한다.
  • 존 코너와 아무 상관이 없던 제 3자가 존 코너와 관련된 것에 관심을 보이다가 휘말려드는 것 또한 비슷하다. 사라 코너 연대기의 제임스 엘리슨이라는 FBI 에이전트가 그랬고, 제니시스의 오브라이언 형사가 그렇다.
  • 자동차와 충돌해서 앞유리에 머리가 박히는 장면. 캐머런이 그랬고 팝스가 그랬다. 영화 3편에서도 T-850이 소방차 전면에 부딪치기는 하는데, 머리가 박히지는 않았다. 다만 소방차를 뺏어 탄다는 점에서는 팝스가 "Nice to meet you. Get out" 라는 대사와 함께 자신과 충돌한 차를 뺏어타는 장면과 비슷하다.

6.1. 개봉 전[편집]

"이 새 영화는 터미네이터 3편이라고 봐도 될 것이다." - 제임스 캐머런
역시 3, 4편이 맘에 안 들었나 보다.
먼저, 본 작품은 명작으로 인정받고 있는 1, 2편의 내용까지 포함하여 시리즈의 리부트를 하고 있기 때문에 기존 터미네이터 팬들은 다소 우려스러운 반응들이 있었다. 하지만, 제임스 캐머런은 본 작품에 대하여 긍정적인 평가를 하였으며, 특히 1, 2편의 많은 명장면을 오마주하고 있고 이것이 새로운 스토리에 자연스럽게 이어지는 점을 들어 자신의 작품들에 대한 존중과 새 시리즈가 큰 힘을 얻을 것이라 평가하였다. 이 발언이 립서비스였다는 의견도 있었는데 개봉 후 반응을 보면 결국 립서비스였던걸로..... 이 영화는 기존 터미네이터 3편처럼 망할거같다는 뜻을 돌려말한건 아닐까

실제로 본 작품은 1, 2, 3편의 주요 장면들과 스토리를 재구성하여 제니시스의 스토리로 이어지게 하고 있어, 문제가 있던 부분[11]을 해결하고 자칫 사라질 수도 있었던 터미네이터 프렌차이즈의 새로운 시리즈를 위한 첫 작품이라는 의미를 가지고 있다. 그러나......

6.2. 개봉 후[편집]

극과 극.[12] 호불호가 갈리기는 하지만 안타깝게도 불호가 더 많다.

로튼토마토에 초기 반응이 떴을 때 비평가들이 매긴 신선도는 40%로 썩은 토마토인 상태로 시작했으며, 이후 26%까지 떨어졌다. 그리고 199명의 평론가가 매긴 평점은 10점 만점에 4.7점이다. 《터미네이터 4》보다도 더한 악평을 얻었다. 그리고 로튼토마토에 따르면 평론가들의 평가는 "엉망이 된 신화의 수렁에 빠져, 《터미네이터 제니시스》는 한 때 강력한 프랜차이즈가 제시했던 시각적인 긴장감이나, 개념적인 지성, 주제의 깊이가 없는 돌출된 신작이다."[13]로 일치하고 있다. 게다가 메타크리틱에서 평론가들이 매긴 점수 역시 100점 만점에 38점으로 평론가들의 혹평을 뜻하는 빨간불 영역에 들었다. 네이버 영화에서 제공하는 전문가 평점은 5.81점이다. 박평식 평론가는 '설정은 고작, 액션은 가까스로'라는 신랄한 한 줄 평을 남기면서 별점 5점을 매겼다. 명작이 될 거라던 캐머런 감독의 공언과는 달리 드러난 비평 결과는 너무 처참해서 캐머런의 그 발언은 그냥 홍보용 멘트였던 것이었다는 의견도 나왔다. 북미 쪽에서 긍정적으로 보는 리뷰가 나오긴 했는데, 여기서도 터미네이터 2를 기대하고 보면 실망할 것이란 문구가 나왔다.

일반인들도 평가가 갈린다. 로튼토마토에서 관객들이 매긴 신선도[14]는 62%(평점은 5점 만점에 3.5점)이며, 메타크리틱에서 유저들이 매긴 점수는 10점 만점에 6.5점이다. IMDB 평점은 6.9점이 됐다. 그리고 시네마스코어에서는 B+를 받았다. 

영화 자체의 완성도나 재미는 2편보단 못하다는 게 대체적인 평가.솔직히 2편이 너무 괴물이지만... 영화 자체에 대해서도 평가가 갈린다.

그렇다고는 해도 터미네이터 시리즈를 오랜시간 지켜본 팬들이라면 나름 감동을 느낄만한 장면들이 많이 나오는 영화. 대표적으로 2편에서 보여주었던 '기계와 인간을 초월하여 서로 이해하는' 요소를 3편에서는 '그것은 다른 101 모델이다'라는 대사로 부정한 적이 있으나, 이번 제니시스에서는 2편의 그 요소를 다시 부활시켰다. 그외 전작에 대한 오마주 장면들 역시 넘쳐나며 기본적인 주제 인간은 운명에게 저항할 수 있는가에 대한 고찰도 있다.

호평하는 측이 긍정적으로 평가하는 요소 가운데 하나는 팝스의 생존. 역시 터미네이터 시리즈의 주인공은 아널드였어. 존 코너는 페이크 주인공일 뿐... 터미네이터 시리즈는 거의 반드시라도 해도 좋을 정도로 희생이 등장하는데, 이러한 클리셰를 깬 점에 점수를 준 것. 시리즈 최초의 '아널드 팬관객이 바라는' 해피엔딩. 대신 기존 시리즈와의 일관성, 세계관, 주제의식이 무너졌지 영화의 본질이 무엇인가, 반드시 엄숙하고 진지한 메시지가 동반되어야하는가, 비극이 과연 최고의 극적 도구일것인가에 관한 질문이라고도 할 수 있다. 솔직히 말해. 아널드만 계속 나오면 나머진 상관없다고

허나 전편에 나오는 오마주 장면들이 많다고 해서 그 장면이 꼭 감동적이라든가 좋은 영화라는 법은 없다. 기존의 터미네이터 시리즈의 팬이었다고 해도 존 코너가 흑화되는 점이나 사라 코너가 자신의 아들을 부정하는 장면 등은 좋게만 볼 수는 없다.[15] 또한 2편이 명작이라고 할만한 중요한 요소 중 하나가 악역인 T-1000의 엄청난 포스인데 T-3000의 작중 모습을 보면 사실상 기능은 T-1000과 별반 다르지 않고 포스는 오히려 떨어진다. [16] T-3000의 인간적인 모습을 부각시킬 의도로 사라와 카일을 말로 설득시키려는 모습을 보이는데 이는 오히려 터미네이터 특유의 살인기계적인 면이 줄어들어 극중 긴장도를 떨어트렸고 후반부를 지루하게 만드는 부분도 있다. [17] 터미네이터 시리즈를 떼어놓고 일반 액션영화 자체로 생각해보아도 그다지 평가가 좋지만은 않다. 

또 아쉬운 점을 들자면 기존 터미네이터 시리즈의 중요 패러다임을 이루고 있던 플롯을 팝스를 통해 뒤엎어놨으면서 그 비밀에 대해서는 아무 것도 해명된 게 없다는 것이 평가를 하락시키고 있다. 이는 차기작을 염두에 둔 것으로 보이지만, 아무 암시도 주지 않고 끝내버린 것. 터미네이터 시리즈를 살려보고자 평행우주 개념을 가져왔지만 결국 평행우주 세계관의 단점을 모조리 가져온 영화라고 보면 되겠다.

게다가 작중에서 중요한 스포일러로 작용했을 부분을 예고편에서 너무 많이 보여버렸기 때문에 상당히 김새는 장면들이 많다. T-3000의 정체가 대표적. 이에 대해서는 감독도 "예고편이 너무 많이 보여줬다"고 인터뷰에서 밝히기도 했다. 마케팅 담당자를 죽입시다 마케팅 담당자는 우리의 원수

어떤 면에서 위의 부정적인 평가는 캐머런이 제작한 1,2편 이후의 터미네이터 시리즈가 보여주었던 실망의 연장선상에서, "분명 안 좋을 거다" 보고나니 역시 안좋았고! "왜 또 만드냐돈 벌어야 하니까" 등의 선입견이 반영된 것임을 보여준다. T3 와 T4 가 개봉하고 난 후, "이제 이 시리즈는 끝났다" 라는 생각을 가진 시리즈 팬들도 상당 수준 존재하기 때문.

종합적으로는 시리즈들에 대한 오마주 및 주제의식을 확실히 하고, 그에 따른 연출과, 스토리의 정리를 위해 거대한 스케일의 세계관을 짜낸 것은 좋았지만, 그렇게 짜인 세계관을 관객들에게 설득력 있게 전달하지 못했다. 예고편에서 너무 많이 보여준 것에 더해서 인간도 기계도 초월했다며 시리즈를 관통하는 중역에 변화를 삽입한 T-3000이 강력한 성능을 가졌을 뿐 특별한 점이 없었다는 점이 큰 단점이라고 볼 수 있다. 가족에 대해 집착한다거나 스카이넷을 대하는 태도가 단순히 기계적인 터미네이터나 악역적인 모습과는 차별화 되긴 했지만, 그 모습들에 대한 제대로 된 설명이 하나도 없었다. 새로운 3부작을 시작하는 시발점으로는 괜찮았다는 말을 들을지 아님 흑역사가 될지는 시간에 달렸다. 더욱 정확히 말하면, 후속작에 따라 달렸다. 하지만...

7. 흥행 성적[편집]

본작의 순제작비는 1억 5500만 달러인데, 보통 영화의 제작비를 논할 때 박스오피스 전문 사이트 중 가장 유명한 박스오피스 모조에 공개된 제작비를 언급하는 게 사실이다. (그러나 모조에서 제작비를 밝히지 않은 작품의 숫자도 상당수이다.) 하지만 이 역시 대략적인 추정치일 뿐 정확한 제작비는 아니며, 따라서 IMDB 등 여러 사이트에서 모조의 제작비를 인용할 때도 추정치(estimated)라는 말을 사용한다. 그리고 마케팅이나 인건비 등 제작 외적인 비용까지 포함한 총 제작비 역시 추정치임은 마찬가지이나 영화의 손익분기점을 계산할 때는 순 제작비보다는 총 제작비를 기준으로 계산하는 게 타당하다. 영화의 완성은 제작 단계를 모두 마쳤다고 해서 되는 게 아니라, 극장에 걸려서 실질적으로 관객들에게 공개되어야 끝나는 것이기 때문이다. 따라서 실질적인 흥행 수치를 따질 때는 영화가 극장 혹은 2차 시장에 배급되기까지 드는 비용 계산도 합쳐서 따져야 한다. 그리고 손익분기점은 제작비의 2배이고, 본작의 총 제작비는 일단 박스오피스닷컴에 따르면 약 2억 2천만 달러이므로 본작의 손익분기점은 4억 4천만 달러이다.[18] 

개봉 3주째인 7월 21일 기준으로 2억 7800만 달러를 벌어들였고 이제 흥행세가 추락 중인 8월 16일까지 전세계에서 3억 2330만 달러를 벌어들이며 본전치기조차 불투명한 상황이라 또 극장용 영화 후속편을 제작할 회사가 있을지 의문시 되고 있다. 하지만 중국에서 하루만에 2660만 달러를 벌어들이는 흥행 대박을 터트린 덕분에 전 세계 총 매출액이 딱 4억 4천만 달러가 되어서 일단 손익분기점은 넘겼다. 그러나 중국은 외국 회사와의 수익 배분이 배타적이라서 해외 영화사가 가져갈 수 있는 실질적인 수입은 적기 때문에 추가적인 수익은 2차 시장에 기대하는 편이 낫다. 그래도 4편과는 달리 극장 상영 중에 손익분기점을 넘어 일단 실패작이라는 오명은 벗었다. 하지만 딱 손익분기점을 통과한 시점에서 상영이 종료되어서 성공작이라고 말하기도 애매하다. 손익분기점은 어디까지나 '망하지 않았다'는 기준일 뿐이기 때문. 매출액이 그대로 수익이 되는 게 아니라 극장 등 여러 이해 관계자와 돈을 나눠 가져야 하기 때문에 손익분기점을 넘었다고 해서 성공했다고 볼 수는 없다. 제작사나 배급사 입장에선 여러모로 아쉬운 작품일 수밖에 없다.[19] 터미네이터 시리즈라는 유명도 높은 프렌차이드가 대박 시장으로 여겨지는 중국 시장을 통해서까지 겨우 손익분기점을 넘긴 것은 긍정적으로 보기는 어렵다. 4편이 쫄딱 망한 상황에서 시리즈의 사활을 걸고 나온 작품이었기에 배급사와 스폰서는 현재 흥행 상태에 불만족스러워할 가능성이 상당히 높고, 팬덤에서는 호불호가 엄청나게 갈리고 혹평이 많은 상황이니 후속작의 가능성에 대해서 불안해지는 것이 사실이다.

제작사인 스카이댄스 프로덕션에서 후속작 제작을 무기한 연기했다는 기사가 떴지만# 스카이댄스의 Media Chief Creative Officer인 Dana Goldberg는 전 세계 박스오피스 성적에 만족한다며 보류된 게 아니라 재조정(re-adjusting)하는 것이라고 말했다.# 하지만 2017년 예정된 후속작은 연기되었다고 한다. 위에서 말한 바와 같이 손익분기점을 간신히 넘긴 성적이 잘 나왔다고 보기 어렵기 때문에 현재 팬덤의 반응은 회의적이다.

7.1. 한국[편집]

개봉일인 7월 2일, 그간 당일 관객 수 1위를 2주 가량 유지하던 《연평해전》을 2위로 누르고 곧바로 1위에 진입했다. 영화진흥위원회 영화관입장권통합전산망에 따르면, 개봉 당일 관객 수는 1086개 스크린에서 24만 8670명, 매출액은 20억 2476만원을 기록했다. 4편이 개봉일에 기록한 매출액 16억원 보다는 높지만 4편의 관객수 533개관에서 동원한 관객 수인 27만명보다는 낮다. 3일에는 하룻동안 23억 5526만 8184원을 벌어들이며 27만 9316명을 동원해 1위를 지켰다. 그리고 개봉 첫 주에 전국 1113개관에서 2만 4073회 상영되어 149만 3243명의 관객을 불러모았으며 125억 3874만 8424원을 벌었다. 주말에는 《연평해전》을 제치고 1위에 올랐으나 평일 기록까지 합산한 주간 박스오피스에선 전자에 밀려 2위로 데뷔했다.

7월 6일에는 일일 박스오피스 순위가 다시 연평해전에 밀려 2위로 떨어졌다. 2주차에는 《연평해전》에 도로 역전당하여 박스오피스 1위를 빼앗겼다. 전국 1035개관에서 2만 9793번 상영되어 114만 948명을 동원했으며 2주차까지 누적 관객 수가 263만 4173명이 되었다. 그리고 누적 매출액은 218억 1376만 8029원이다. 그러나 주말 박스오피스에서는 새로 개봉한 《인사이드 아웃》에 밀려나 3위를 기록했다. 

3주차에는 전국 651개관에서 1만 5935회 상영되어 45만 5054명의 관객을 동원하여 3주차까지 누적 관객 수가 308만 9171명이 되었다. 그리고 누적 매출액은 254억 282만 1929원이 되었다. 기존에 상영했던 강력한 경쟁작인 《인사이드 아웃》과 《연평해전》은 물론이고 스크린과 상영 회차도 훨씬 적었던 신작 《픽셀》에도 밀려나서 박스오피스 4위로 하락했다. 

4주차에는 전국 439개관에서 6158회 상영되어 11만 9450명의 관객을 불러모았는데 4주차까지 누적 관객수는 320만 8571명이다. 또 4주차까지 누적 매출액은 263억 2120만 4429원이다. 전주보다 무려 73%나 되는 하락율을 보여 뒷심이 많이 빠져서 전주보다 3단계 하락한 박스오피스 7위를 차지했다. 

5주차에는 《암살》과 《미션 임파서블: 로그 네이션》, 《미니언즈》 등 여러 쟁쟁한 신작들의 개봉으로 더 큰 폭으로 하락해 전국 266개관에서 1437회 상영되어 2만 2684명의 관람객을 모았다. 그래서 5주차까지 누적된 관객 수는 323만 1253명이며, 누적 매출액은 264억 8833만 1129원이다. 그리고 5주차에는 전주보다 3단계 하락한 박스오피스 10위를 차지해 간신히 턱걸이로 10위권에 남았다. 

그 뒤 연이어 추락하며 8월에 들어가자 박스오피스 20위 바깥으로 밀려난지 오래이다. 16일까지 흥행은 323만 8천명으로 사실상 극장가에서 막을 내리는 분위기.

이후 극장가에서 완전히 상영이 종료됐으며 아래는 최종 흥행 결과이다.

7.2. 북미[편집]

북미에서는 6월 30일 화요일 전야제에 벌어들인 230만 달러를 포함해 개봉일에 북미 전역 3758개관에서 상영되어 893만 404달러를 벌면서 2위로 등장했다. 동시에 개봉한 워너 브라더스의 《매직 마이크 XXL》에게 밀려났는데 이 작품이 북미에서 청소년 관람불가 등급과 같은 R등급 영화인 걸 보면 꽤나 체면 구기는 스타트를 했다. 심지어 전자는 북미에서 3355개관에서 개봉하여 본작보다 훨씬 적은 상영관에서 개봉했는데도 본작을 누르고 1위를 차지했다. 전편인 《터미네이터 4》와 비교해보면 전편은 2009년에 메모리얼 데이 전일(목요일에 개봉)에 개봉해 1390만 달러를 벌었다. 그리고 이 금액은 2009년 똑같은 독립기념일 시즌에 개봉했던 《퍼블릭 에너미》보다 9% 많은 금액이다. 그런데 그것도 잠시 그 다음날인 목요일에는 다시 탄력이 붙은 《인사이드 아웃》, 《쥬라기 월드》에 밀려 3위로 하락했다. 이 영화들이 각각 개봉 3주차, 4주차에 접어든 걸 보면 매우 아쉬운 양상이다. 목요일에는 650만 달러를 벌어들였고 개봉 2일 동안 벌어들인 누적 매출액은 1543만 달러가 되었다. 이는 메모리얼 데이 전일에 개봉한 4편은 물론 지난 2003년에 수요일에 개봉해서 이틀 동안 2835만 달러를 벌었던 《터미네이터 3》보다는 46% 적은 금액이다. 그리고 주말동안 2701만 8486달러를 벌어들이며 결국 개봉 첫 주에 3위로 데뷔했다. 그래서 개봉 첫 주에 벌어들인 북미 누적 매출액은 총 4247만 4183달러이다. 이는 5일동안 6532만 달러를 벌었던 4편보다는 35% 적고, 5일동안 7239만 달러를 벌었던 3편보다는 41% 적은 금액으로 북미 흥행에는 빨간불이 켜졌다고 할 수 있다. 

2주차에 북미에서는 전주보다 25개관이 늘어난 3783개관에서 상영됐지만 한 개관당 평균 3656달러를 벌어들이며 주말 동안 전주보다 49% 하락한 1383만 369달러를 벌었다. 북미에서도 그 위력을 자랑한 《미니언즈》 가 개봉해서 전주보다 1단계 하락한 박스오피스 4위를 차지했다. 그리고 2주차까지 누적된 북미 매출액은 6884만 8110달러이다. 이는 개봉 후 12일 동안 9266만 달러를 벌었던 4편보다 26% 뒤처진 기록으로 사실상 북미에서 1억 달러를 돌파하긴 불가능 해졌다. 그리고 이후에 디즈니의 《앤트맨》, 소니 픽처스의 《픽셀》, 같은 배급사인 파라마운트의 차기작인 《미션 임파서블: 로그 네이션》 등 쟁쟁한 경쟁작들이 연달아 개봉하기 때문에 본작의 입지는 더욱 좁아지게 됐다. 

3주차에 북미에서는 전주보다 무려 969개관이 줄어든 2814개관에서 상영되었으며 한 개관당 평균 2814달러를 벌어들이며 주말 동안 전주보다 60.9%나 하락한 540만 2189달러를 벌었다. 평일에는 쭉 4위를 유지하다가 주말에는 신작인 《앤트맨》과 《트레인렉》의 선전으로 전주보다 2단계 하락한 박스오피스 6위를 차지했다. 그래서 북미에서 3주차까지 벌어들인 금액은 총 8064만 2314달러이다. 북미에서는 2주 정도는 일정한 수의 상영관에서 영화를 상영하다가 흥행이 부진하다 싶으면 3주차에 스크린에서 한꺼번에 막내리는 경향이 있는데 3주차에 상영관이 거의 천 개 가량이나 빠져나갔다는 건 북미에서도 본작을 흥행 실패작으로 간주했단 뜻이다. 

4주차에 북미에서는 전주보다 더 많은 상영관이 줄어들어 1112개관이나 줄어든 1702개관에서 상영되었으며 한 개관당 평균적으로 1421달러를 벌었고 주말 동안 전주보다 55.2% 하락한 241만 7910달러를 벌었다. 그리고 《픽셀》을 비롯한 신작 3편의 공세로 전주보다 4단계 하락한 박스오피스 10위를 차지했다. 그리고 4주차까지 누적된 북미 누적 매출액은 8568만 3524달러이다. 매주 막을 내린 극장 수가 점점 더 늘어나고 있고 머지않아 북미에서는 곧 빠르게 상영 종료될 것으로 보인다. 

북미에서는 9월 17일 부로 79일 간의 상영 기간이 끝나고 모든 북미 극장가에서 종영하였으며 최종 북미 매출액은 8976만 956달러로 북미에서는 사실상 흥행 실패로 끝났다.

7.3. 글로벌[편집]

북미 개봉 전에 10개 소규모 국가의 1277개관에서 개봉해서 830만 달러를 벌어들이며 해외 박스오피스 7위로 데뷔했다. 싱가포르에서 28개관에서 140만 달러를 벌어들이며 1위로 등장했고, 페루에선 85개관에서 88만 천달러를, 베트남에서 69개관에서 69만 4천 달러를, 터키에선 309개관에서 57만 8천 달러를 벌었다.

2주차에는 북미를 포함해 전 세계 47개국으로 확대 개봉했는데 주말 동안 7400만 달러를 벌어들이며 3주 동안 전 세계 박스오피스를 호령하던 《쥬라기 월드》를 몰아내고 박스오피스 1위에 등극했지만 안심할 수 없는 상황이다. 전주에 소규모 개봉을 한 데 이어 2주차까지 총 해외 누적 매출액이 8550만 달러가 되었다. 미리 개봉한 10개국을 제외하고 해외 36개국 중 28개국에서 1위를 했는데, 총 누적 매출액이 많은 국가를 순서대로 살펴보면 러시아에서 1150개관에서 1250만 달러를, 한국에서 1275개관에서 1110만 달러를, 멕시코에서 670개관에서 620만 달러를, 영국과아일랜드에서 536개관에서 560만 달러를, 오스트레일리아에서 258개관에서 470만 달러를, 브라질에서 549개관에서 4백만 달러를, 프랑스에서 680개관에서 380만 달러를, 인도에서 600개관에서 280만 달러를, 베네수엘라에서 75개관에서 240만 달러를, 말레이시아에서 141개 지역에서 230만 달러를, 대만에서 80개관에서 210만 달러를, 홍콩에서 44개관에서 190만 달러를, 필리핀에서 149개관에서 140만 달러를, 우크라이나에선 235개관에서 66만 6천 달러를, 싱가포르에선 전주보다 54%나 하락한 62만 5천 달러를 벌었지만, 총 230만 달러를 벌며 2주 연속 1위를 지켰다.콜롬비아에서는 84만 달러를 벌며 3위를 차지했는데 총 3백만 달러를 벌었고, 페루에서는 47만 4천 달러를 벌며 총 170만 달러를 번 채 1위를 지켰다. 그리고 개봉 첫 주에 북미 매출액까지 합쳐 벌어들인 전 세계 총 매출액은 1억 2797만 4183달러이다. 

3주차에는 일본, 독일, 아르헨티나, 이탈리아 등 14개국에서 추가 개봉했는데, 주말동안 60개국에서 4730만 달러를 벌어서 3주차까지 누적된 해외 매출액이 1억 5610만 달러가 되었다. 그리고 《미니언즈》의 폭발적인 화력에 밀려 전 세계 박스오피스 2위로 하락했다. 새로 개봉한 국가 중 일본에서 가장 많은 돈을 벌었는데 339개관에서 540만 달러를 벌며 전주 1위로 등장했던 《어벤져스: 에이지 오브 울트론》을 제쳤지만 호소다 마모루 감독의 신작 《괴물의 아이》에 밀려서 2위로 데뷔했다. 독일에서는 554개관에서 310만 달러를 벌어들이며 2위로 데뷔했다. 스페인에선 373개관에서 130만 달러를 벌었다. 이탈리아에서 유일하게 1위로 데뷔했는데 주말 동안 530개관에서 120만 달러를 벌었다. 한국에선 2주차에 775개관에서 510만 달러를 벌어들이며 2위로 하락했는데 이는 개봉 첫 주보다 54% 하락한 금액이다. 러시아에서는 2주차에 1121개관에서 전주보다 70% 하락한 380만 달러를 벌었는데 2주차까지 총 1910만 달러를 벌었다. 영국에서는 주말동안 전주보다 43% 하락한 270만 달러를 벌어서 총 1150만 달러를 벌었다. 또 다른 매출액이 높은 국가들을 살펴보면 브라질에서 485개관에서 전주보다 25% 하락한 270만 달러를 벌어서 총 810만 달러를, 호주에선 260개관에서 .전주보다 40% 하락한 220만 달러를 벌어서 총 810만 달러를, 프랑스에선 713개관에서 전주보다 52% 하락한 190만 달러를 벌어서 총 690만 달러를, 멕시코에서 673개관에서 저주보다 67% 하락한 160만 달러를 벌어서 총 970만 달러를 벌었다. 북미 매출액도 포함한 전 세계 총 매출액은 2억 2494만 8110달러이다. 

4주차에는 중동 지역 4개국에서 추가적으로 개봉하여 주말 동안 64개국에서 상영되어 1968만 달러를 벌어서 4주차까지 해외 누적 매출액이 1억 9680만 달러가 되었다. 그리고 전 세계 박스오피스 전주보다 4단계 하락한 6위로 하락했다. 아랍 에미리트에서 37개 지역에서 130만 달러를 벌어들이며 1위를 했는데 이는 《퍼시픽 림》보다는 93% 많고, 《루시》보다는 15% 많은 액수이다. 그리고 일본에서 230만 달러를 벌어 총 1150만 달러를, 독일에서 160만 달러를 벌어 총 590만 달러를, 아르헨티나에서 120만 달러를 벌어 총 430만 달러를, 스페인에서 56만 5천 달러를 벌어 총 290만 달러를 벌어들이며 2주차를 견뎌냈다. 그리고 개봉 3주차에 접어든 한국에서 210만 달러를 벌어 총 2250만 달러를, 영국과 아일랜드에서 130만 달러를 벌어 총 1440만 달러를, 러시아에서 120만 달러를 벌어 총 2120만 달러를, 프랑스에서 110만 달러를 벌어 총 880만 달러를, 브라질에서 백만 달러를 벌어 총 1010만 달러를, 호주에서 84만 4천 달러를 벌어 총 950만 달러를 벌었다. 그리고 북미 매출액까지 포함한 총 매출액은 2억 7744만 2314달러이다. 

5주차에는 64개국에서 전주보다 50% 하락한 1070만 달러를 벌어들이며 해외 누적 매출액이 2억 1940만 달러가 되었다. 그리고 전 세계 박스오피스에서는 8위로 하락했다. 5주차에 해외 국가 중 가장 많은 돈을 벌어들인 국가를 순서대로 살펴보면 일본에서 170만 달러를 벌어들이며 총 1660만 달러를, 독일에서 110만 달러를 벌어들이며 총 770만 달러를, 영국과 아일랜드에서 72만 8천 달러를 벌어들이며 총 1610만 달러를, 프랑스에서 65만 천 달러를 벌어들이며 총 980만 달러를, 아르헨티나에서 63만 8천 달러를 벌어들이며 총 530만 달러를 벌었다. 최종적으로 개봉할 국가는 중국(8월 23일 개봉)인데 여기서 얼마를 버느냐에 따라 최종 흥행 성적이 판가름 될 것으로 보인다. 또 북미 매출액까지 포함한 총 매출액은 3억 498만 3524달러이다. 

6주차에도 해외 64개국에서 상영되었으며 주말동안 480만 달러를 벌었는데 전 세계 박스오피스에서는 전주와 동일한 8위를 유지했다. 그리고 6주차까지 누적된 해외 매출액은 2억 3천만 달러이다. 일본에서 130만 달러를 벌엇 총 1960만 달러를 벌었으며 독일에서는 55만 달러를 벌어 4주동안 총 880만 달러를 벌었다. 6주차까지 북미 매출액까지 합친 총 매출액은 3억 1769만 3413달러이다. 

7주차에는 주말동안 140만 달러를 벌었으며 7주차까지 누적된 해외 매출액은 2억 3380만 달러이다. 전 세계 박스오피스에서는 전주보다 9단계 하락한 17위를 차지했다. 

8주차에는 주말 동안 72만 2천 달러를 벌었으며 8주차까지 누적된 해외 매출액은 2억 3470만 달러로 전주와 동일한 전 세계 박스오피스 17위를 유지했다. 그리고 8주차까지 북미 매출액까지 포함한 총 매출액은 3억 2470만 9708달러이다. 

9주차에는 마지막 개봉 국가인 중국에서 제대로 터진 덕분에 전 세계 박스오피스 1위로 복귀했다! 8월 23일에 중국에서 개봉하자마자 1위를 찍었다고 보도했다. 제작사가 중국만 밀어주는 이유가 있었다! 중국에서 자정 개봉 때 번 212만 달러를 포함해 일요일 개봉 하루만에 무려 2660만 달러를 벌었다. 그리고 이 하루 만에 번 돈으로 박스오피스 1위를 차지했다. 이래서 중국, 중국 하는 거다 이는 중국에서 역대 4번째로 높은 개봉 성적으로 《분노의 질주: 더 세븐》, 《어벤져스 2》. 《트랜스포머 4》 다음으로 높은 개봉 성적이다. 본작은 중국 전체의 42%에 해당하는 상영관에서 개봉했으며 개봉일에만 4900번 상영됐다. 이대로 중국에서 흥행 가도를 달려 북미에서 부진했던 부분마저 메꾼다면 후속편이 나오는 것도 가능한 얘기이다. 여하튼 9주차까지 누적된 해외 누적 매출액은 2억 6400만 달러이다. 또 9주차까지 북미 매출액까지 합산한 총 금액은 3억 5270만 3744달러이다. 데우스 엑스 차이나

10주차에도 중국에서의 흥행 가도를 달려서 2주 연속으로 전 세계 박스오피스의 왕좌에 군림했다. 중국에서 개봉 2주차 주말 동안 전주보다 12% 하락한 2340만 달러를 벌었는데 중국에서 총 누적 매출액이 8280만 달러가 되었다. 그리고 10주차까지 해외 누적 매출액이 3억 2010만 달러가 되었고 전 세계 총 매출액이 4억 달러를 넘어 극장 상영 중에는 미치지 못할 것 같았던 손익분기점에 점점 다다르고 있다.

11주차에도 중국의 흥행 성공을 발판으로 3주 연속으로 전 세계 박스오피스 1위를 차지했다. 주말 동안 북미를 제외한 7개국에서 전주보다 51% 감소한 1150만 달러를 벌었는데 중국에서만 그중 1140만 달러를 벌어서 3주 연속으로 1위를 지켰다. 중국 매출액이 1억 9백만 달러를 돌파해서북미 매출액을 추월했으며, 11주차까지 누적된 해외 매출액은 3억 4630만 달러가 되었다. 8일에 중국에서 같은 배급사의 동생 격인 《미션 임파서블 5》가 개봉하기 전까지 1억 2천만 달러 이상을 벌어들일 것으로 보인다. 11주차까지 북미 매출액도 포함한 총 매출액은 4억 3592만 6525달러로 손익분기점이 코앞에 이르렀다. 

12주차에는 그동안 중국에서의 흥행 성공으로 대접받았던 게 무색해질 정도로 찬밥 신세가 되어서 전주보다 11단계나 폭락한 전 세계 박스오피스 12위를 차지했다. 12주차에 해외에서는 주말 동안 170만 달러를 벌었으며 해외 누적 매출액은 3억 5040만 달러이다. 12주차까지 누적된 북미 매출액인 8973만 2035달러까지 합쳐 총 매출액은 4억 4013만 2035달러로 마침내 손익분기점을 넘어섰다. 

중국에서 상영도 완전히 끝났으며 최종 전 세계 매출액은 4억 4016만 956달러이다. 

8. 그 외 이야기들[편집]

  • 영문 제목의 부제인 Genisys가 일종의 합성어이다. ''기원', '창세기'를 뜻하는 제네시스(Genesis)와 시스템(System)의 철자를 접목해서 일종의 몬더그린처럼 보이는 효과가 있다. 해외 팬들은 영 어정쩡한 부제라고 평가절하하는 의견이 있다. 개봉이후 제니시스라는 명칭은 작중에 등장하는 하나의 거대한 시스템임이 밝혀졌다.
  • 4편은 본편의 발번역도 문제였지만, 무엇보다도 제목을 심하게 의역한 것으로 유명했다. 원 부제의 의미는 '구원(Salvation)'이었으나 국내 제목은 뜬금없는 미래 전쟁의 시작이라는 명칭을 달고 나왔기 때문에 괴리감이 심각했다.~따라서 이번 제니시스의 제목도 이런 발번역의 효과를 받아 전혀 엉뚱한 번역 제목이 나올 우려도 있었지만 그대로 음역한 제니시스로 확정되었다.
  • 재밌게도 아널드 슈워제네거와 이병헌은 모두 김지운 감독의 영화를 거쳐 간 공통점이 있다. 모두 이번 터미네이터 신작의 연기적 특성을 미리 엿볼 수 있는 포인트가 들어가 있다. 슈워제네거가 출연한 《라스트 스탠드》는 그야말로 기존의 슈워제네거식 액션 영화의 진수문제는 그 진수가 발연기와 개연성 없는 스토리를 포함한다는 것를 보여주었으며, 이병헌이 출연한 《악마를 보았다》는 그야말로 복수에 눈멀어 끝까지 상대를 추적하는 터미네이터 캐릭터가 되었다는 점에서 T-1000과 비교할 만하다.그보다 한때 "메탈은 가장 완벽한 물질" 이라고 말하던 이병헌이 결국 스스로 메탈이 되었다.
  • 이번 작품 역시 새로운 3부작 시리즈의 첫 작품이 될 수 있다고 하며, 후속작에 대한 부분은 본편의 흥행에 따라 결정될 것이라고 한다.#
  • WWE 레슬매니아 31에서는 본 작품의 홍보를 위해 슈워제네거의 특별 영상이 트리플 H가 등장할 때 포함되었다.
  • 공짜 내비 어플인 Waze에서 터미네이터 제니시스 음성 안내 서비스를 한다. 갈 곳을 선택하면 '사라 찾으러 가는 길에 너에게 알려준다' 던지 '니 코트 니 부츠 내놔! 농담이야" 같은 대사를 하고, 목적지에 도착하면 "아스탈라비스타" 같은 명대사도 해 준다.
  • 최근 헐리우드 영화들이 그렇듯 중국 시장에서의 흥행을 의식했는지 엔딩곡인 Fighting Shadows를 Jane Zhang(장정영)이 불렀다.
  • 2편과 3편이 2017년 5월 19일과 2018년 6월 29일에 개봉한다고 파라마운트에서 2014년 9월 5일 발표했다.# 아널드 슈워제네거가 속편에 나올 것이라고 말했다.#앙대!
  • 한 달 전에 개봉한 《쥬라기 월드》와 비슷한 점이 많다. 최고였던 오리지널들에 비해 부족해서 시리즈가 사장되어버리게 많든 속편 이후로 수년만에 새로 나온 신작이라는 점이나, 전작들을 오마쥬한 점이나,옛스타들을 복귀시키거나 새로운악당을 출연시키거나 새로운 삼부작을 시작했다는 점이다. 그러나 흥행과 비평 모두 쥬라기 월드에게 밀렸다
  • '희생'은 시리즈 전통적으로 반복되는 요소로서(1편 : 카일 리스의 희생, 2편 : T800의 희생, 3편 : T850의 희생, 4편 : 마커스의 희생, 심지어는 사라코너 연대기 : 캐머런의 희생) 주로 사라 코너나 존 코너를 위해 벌어지던 것으로, 이례적으로 본편에선 일어나지 않았다. 오히려 작동이 정지되며 2편의 오마주를 보여주던 T800이 극적으로 업그레이드까지 마친채 부활한것. 이것을 단순히 기존의 우울한 클리셰를 깨기위한 의도로 볼것인지, 본작에서 밝혀지지 않은 떡밥(팝스를 과거로 보낸 인물과 그 이유 등)을 후속편에서 풀어나가며 등장하게 될지 귀추가 주목된다. 존 코너가 앞으로 등장하지 않거나 조연으로 전락할 가능성이 있는 현재, 희생할 가능성이 높은 인물은 사라 코너와 팝스, 카일 리스이다.
  • Windows 10의 공개와 겹치면서 '윈도 10은 스카이넷이야' 드립이 유행했었다.
  • 한가지 미스터리는, 미래시점에서의 존 코너가 영화 초반 콜로라도팀의 스카이넷 코어 공략작전의 성공을 이미 경험한것처럼 알고있다는것. 단순히 사라 코너로부터 들어서 알 수 있는것이 아닌 것이, 저 시점에서 사라는 등장하지 않으며(사망으로 추정) 존 코너가 직접 스카이넷의 코어 성공을 경험한 상태에서 스스로 과거로 돌아가 반란군을 이끌어온 것이 아닌 이상 알 수 없다. 굳이 끼워 맞추자면 원판에서 카일 리스가 피터 실버만 박사에게 취조당하는 장면을 사라가 보게되는데 여기서 박사가 왜 컴퓨터가 로봇을 과거로 보냈냐는 질문에 방어선이 뚫려서 사실상 패배가 눈앞이었기 때문에 더 이상 선택권이 없었기 때문이라고 답하는데 이걸 사라 코너가 기억하고 있다가 말을 해준 걸 수도 있긴하다.
  • 유튜브에 올라오는 영상들을 보면 거의 다 한국어 자막이 달려 있는 영상들을 짜깁기한 것인데 아무래도 한국에서 극장 버전이 유출되었고 이것이 가장 널리 퍼진 것으로 보인다.
[1] 린다 해밀턴은 키가 168cm인데 에밀리아 클라크는 157cm이다.[2] 스카이넷은 과거로 터미네이터를 보내 미래의 기술을 퍼트려야 자신이 있을 수 있고 존 코너는 카일이나 다른 수호자들을 보내야 자신이 있을수 있다. 사실상 서로의 존재를 파괴하는건 일종의 덤이다.[3] 스카이넷은 사라 코너와 카일 리스를 정확히 특정할 수 있게됬고 더불어 1995년에 존이 자신에게로 T-800을 보낼수 없음으로 2부터의 타임라인이 원천봉쇄된다. 정확히 말하면 사라 코너에게로 누군가 팝스를 보낸 것도 커다란 원인이지만..[4] 묘한 것이 카일은 메시지처럼 기존의 역사와 다르게 살아남았고 정작 전해달라고 했던 존은 T-3000으로 변모하고나서 이 메시지를 정면으로 부정한다. 어떻게 보면 말이 씨가 된 것처럼 메시지가 그대로 적용된 셈이기도 하다.[5] 허나, 빌 팩스턴이 연기한 양아치는 머리스타일이 변경되었고 얼굴에 타이어 마크가 사라졌고, 원래1편에서 터미네이터 손에 몸이 꿰뚫린 양아치도 머리스타일이 달라졌다. 제일 비슷한것은 민소매 티셔츠를 코트안에 입은 터미네이터 기준 왼쪽에 서 있는 양아치인데, 이 양아치도 원래 1편에 하고 나왔던 자주색 눈화장이 없다.[6] 유튜브 클립에서는 Fuck you, Asshole!이라고 말하며 칼을 꺼내는 게 잘렸다. 영화에는 제대로 나온다.[7] "I can't be bargained with. I can't be reasoned with. I don't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. I absolutely will not stop, ever, until Skynet rules this world."[8] "Listen, and understand! That Terminator is out there! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead."[9] 하지만 이것은 2편의 감독판에서만 나오는 씬을 오마주한 것이다. T2 감독판의 장면은 T-1000이 가짜 사라 코너로 변하여 존을 속이려 하지만, 진짜 사라코너가 나타나 가짜에게 총을 쏘기 직전에, 존이 T-1000의 발 부분이 바닥과 같은 색과 문양을 띄우고 있는 것을 발견하고 피한다[10] 그런데 이건 터미네이터 2 에서 엑체질소로 샤워한 T-1000과도 닮았다.[11] 스토리상 가장 큰 문제는 1, 2편과 3, 4편의 스토리 연결점으로 지적되어 왔다.[12] 지금은 '극과 극'이라는 글귀가 써져있지만 개봉당시엔 터미네이터 팬들에게는 크나큰 선물이었다고 표기했으나 얼마후엔 평이 좋지 않다로 바뀌었다. 말 그대로 극과 극.[13] Mired in its muddled mythology, Terminator: Genisys is a lurching retread that lacks the thematic depth, conceptual intelligence, or visual thrills that launched this once-mighty franchise.[14] 별 세 개 반 이상을 준 관객의 비율[15] 다만 사라 코너가 이 시점에서 카일과 육체 관계도 맺지 않았는데 아들이 어쩌고 할 상황도 아니다. 게다가 눈 앞에서 터미네이터 화 한 상태를 보여줬고...앞으로 태어날 존 코너와 자기는 관계 없다고 공언하기도 했다.[16] 애초에 제니시스는 카일과 사라가 만나는 이야기로 비교하려면 1편과 해야한다. 물론 1편의 T-800의 포스를 따라가지 못 하는 면이 있긴 하다. 다만 이병헌의 T-1000 연기는 로버트 패트릭에 밀리지 않는다.[17] 한편 시리즈 처음으로 터미네이터나 스카이넷이 인간과 대화를 시도한 것이다. 이것이 스카이넷의 심경의 변화를 표현한 것이라면 서로 멸망시켜야 하는 불모한 싸움에서 새로운 가능성의 편린을 보여주는 것이 된다. 하지만 불행하게도 작중 스카이넷과 터미네이터가 가지게 된 감정은 영화의 플롯에 별다른 의미를 지니지 않는다.[18] 사실 구체적이고 정확한 제작비는 제작사만 알고 있다고 할 수 있다. 모든 제작사가 영화의 모든 정보를 꼭 구체적으로 제시하는 건 아니기에. 혹시 파라마운트의 재무제표를 본다면 본작의 정확한 제작비를 알 수 있을지도 모른다.[19] 실제로 중국 시장이 아니었다면 이 영화는 손익분기점도 못 넘긴 망한 영화가 되었을 것이다.
